I must say I often thought they were the same. Now I can say I went from liberal to conservative during my life. I learned from this video.
The general point I agree with, but I am not sure about all of his classifications. Most of them are spot on, but maybe not all of them. Definitions change over time and failing to keep up with or notice that and then using the terms in their outmoded definitions can cause confusion.
Interesting video and I would agree about his description of liberals....from 50 years ago! All of his examples of "liberals" were from way back. I dare say that FDR and JFK would be considered conservative by today's liberals. I don't see any hope of the democratic party shucking off the leftist diatribe.
I agree that is something of the past. Dems are socialist and some want full on communism. The blue collar dem is extinct. With that said we can make the same post about republicans.
That is why I don't call them Liberals, they are not. They are Progressives which is close to socialism, marxism or fascism rather than liberalism.
All that seems to matter anymore is whether they're D or R. Regardless of whether the D is Liberal, Left, Progressive, Socialist, Communist, or whatever, Party Identity Politics will require them to vote for whatever lunatic bullshit another Dem puts up, and vote against anything an Rep puts up, regardless of it's merits. It's time to clean house and restore our congress to it's original role.
All of it is just labels while the majority of Americans identify with elements all over the spectrum depending on the topic. When it comes to social issues, what is a liberal vs conservative position? On many social issues you'd imagine a conservative to favor freedom and no gov't interference with private lives but how then would R's reliably court the evangelical vote? On immigration, I'd expect a little more concern from liberals about just who we let into this country since every new person coming here with strong religious ideologies is another potential mind to have to change on gay/women's rights. I'd love to see what it looks like when smart minds debate the issues without the party politics and voter block pandering.
It looks like freedom, but unfortunately the climate of our "system" prevents it. That's why I say we need to clean house. I'd really like to see the parties disbanded and campaign finance reformed. Senators and representatives need to be concerned about their constituents, NOT their party platform.
