pretty interesting podcast https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/17/podcasts/the-daily/hong-kong-protests.html what started the extradition bill, some dude killed his GF and can't be sent back to China for prosecuting. HK residents are scared because it may setup a system where China can just pickup anyone for extradition. and learning how the government is setup. Basically the chief executive is appointed from China, so she has to appease the Chinese govt and the HK people, but ultimately China.
The Chicomms will slowly grind them down and crush any exceptionalist notions Hong Kongers may have. China’s grown tremendously since they took over Hong Kong, they don’t need to appease the city anymore. Give it 20-30 years and they’ll be fully absorbed and have all the fascist goodness the rest of China does.
Sucks for HK but that's the deal when the UK gave them back to China. They're not their own country, just another city in China operating at Chinas whim.
