Been out a the game for a while....what's the current practice regarding flipping DOTs? I normally run Pirellis if that matters. Thanks
All m/c tire carcasses and tread piles are put on the tire in the direction of rotation during construction. And in some instances the actual tread rubber is done in the same method. Because of this flipping tires is not suggested.
So basically like it was 5-10 years ago....dont flip them. But tons of people do and dont have tires exploding. and shit.
Flip 'em. If you see them starting to delaminate where the rubber is scarfed (overlapped)... stop flippin' 'em! Why wouldn't anyone flip 'em? There could be direction-biased design elements in the construction of the carcass. (Tread patterns not withstanding.) The wear pattern could induce undesirable handling traits. Consider the shoulder of the flat spot now being a very thin contact patch while you're leaned hard, and on the gas! (Done that one enough times to not do it again.) Why would anyone flip 'em? The carcass design is directionally symmetrical. The wear pattern does not disrupt handling. You're a dumb, cheap bastard...not realizing the cost of error is always more expensive than doing it the right way.
Flipped Pirelli DOTs all the time with no issues at a race-winning pace. My vendor (who I trust implicitly) said it wasn't an issue.
Thanks Guys. I figured but thought Id ask....You know what they say the only stupid question is the one MetalHead asks....
