    This is most untrue

Diesel subs operate submerged on electric motors. Late model Diesel Subs with anechoic coatings are THE QUIETEST subs on the planet. Period. Even quieter than US Boomers. Nuc boats need pumps to circulate primary and secondary coolent through the reactor loop and heat exchangers. They can use natural convection but performance is severely limited to less than 10% of peak. Inotherwords, they can barely move, mostly just loiter and operate essential systems only.

A good deisel boat skipper can be up your ass before you know it. The main drawback of a deisel sub is endurance (nuc boats make thier own O2 and water) and speed. A 688 class nuc attack sub goes 25+++ submerged and the fastest diesels go maybe 14 knots and thisis only for a very breif time as battery life is non linear when speeds increase. The 688 class fast attack subs were designed as open water carrier escorts, they are indeed very fast but not comfortable in shollow confined waters, like those off of China and Korea. The US understands this and has developed a new smaller class of sub for just this reason.

Submarines and most anti-submarine surface ships and aircraft depend on PASSIVE (not Active) sonar to detect each other. Active sonar is rarely used by survace ships or subs anymore. It's like shining a flashlight in the dark. You emit a narrow beam with limited feild of view but everyone can "see" (in this case hear) you. As a skipper I love active sonar, I know exactly where you are, where to avoid and can easily calculate a good firing solution based on your broadcasting of your location.

Stealth is best, depth and speed are next best.
