Seriously though, I don't do anything super important. I'm a medic in a NATO unit. Nice assignment and my job is pretty good. Working in a Joint Service setting is great and I am not looking forward to the day I go to a regular unit.

 

I did my time in the scullery. About 35 years ago, a cook handed me a giant metal pan containing a blackened, amorphous glob that had once purported to be meatballs, and told me to soak and clean it. After spending over three decades soaking at the bottom of the Caribbean, I suppose that pan is ready for a final cleaning. Eventually, I got promoted to attendant in the officer's mess, which was a much nicer experience.

I did help out a Swedish man who cracked his head open while I was TDY in Poland. He couldnt speak english, but he understood what we were doing and did what I asked...great patient!! No combat award, but it felt good to help out someone who was in need...just glad I was able to be there and assist.

The crowd around us thought we were "high speed" since we reacted so fast with the "equipment" we used. I guess having my aid bag ready and black exam gloves (so tactical) made us look SF.

We got a round of beers and many handshakes afterwards...it was a positive showing for US military in a foreign setting.
