The book says measure when bike os on side stand. Well........duh, no side stand. What is a safe slack while on ground OR rear stand???

Using a rear stand is better...

It needs to have enough slack so that when the shock compresses the chain isn't so tight it limits swingarm travel. It'll need to be looser than you think at first...

If you want to know for sure (for any bike) take the shock off the bike (or spring off of the shock). Move the swingarm so it is exactly in line with the swingarm pivot. This is the point where the chain is at it's tightest. Adjust slack at this point to .25 in. or so. Put the shock back on and re-measure when its on your stand. Perfect.

To answer your question, I would think there is no difference between the bike on the side stand and it sitting up-right, Very little difference between sidestand and sitting on rear spooled stand.
