One of NC's greatest heroes was born in Asheville 7/31/18, and went on to fly The Memphis Belle over the skies of Europe. There were several crews bumping into the 25 mission survival number, but the plane name and story behind it, was the reason his crew was selected to be famous (The other plane was named something not so nice for the folks back home like Angle of Death, or something).

During training in the US, he landed his B17 in Asheville, just to impress some girls back home. The runway was too short, and he burned up his brakes. So he couldm't take off. He had to call his CO back in Washington state to send a whole crew and parts to fix the plane. On return, his CO said that he wanted to kick him out, but couldn't because there were too few pilots, but he vowed to do "everything in his power to make sure that Morgan would be the oldest junior officer to ever serve in the USAF." And, he was true to his word because Bob lead missions over Germany, at a lower rank to those he lead.

Another odd thing was that his dad lost his Asheville furniture biz during the Great Depression. They lost their home. Friends let the family move in with them.....on the frickin Biltmore Estate!

HBD Bob, sorry that a commie like Mathew Modine was allowed to play you in the movie.
