Weather protection maybe. I had to cover my tomatoes & peppers recently to protect them from all the rain we recently had
Around here there are a few places that do that too. They are pheasant farms. The birds live among the corn and are kept in by the nets. By the end of the year the nets come down and corn gets harvested.
Some of the smaller farms around here use the mesh to keep the birds and pests out. I'm guessing with the cost of transport that corn is quite pricey in HI so it's worth the added protection.
