In Your Corner Dungeonesque Crab AI Version

Since when? The music I create with UDIO can be
copyrighted. AI is just a tool, the creator using the
AI owns the work product, the AI doesn't own it.
The owner/producer of the AI may stipulate that
he/she owns that which is produced but that is
still not the AI owning it. It's a new area that is
complicated and being worked out but the product
of the AI definitely belongs to a creator.

Since the inception of copyright in the US it has been understood to only be for HUMAN authorship. This has recently been tested a few times and the copyright office is holding firm, machine generated content is not eligable for copyright. If you use AI in the creation of a work you MUST declare where and how so that can be excluded from the copyright for a work.

As a couple examples, a guy used AI to generate a scene and then did some very light post touch up with editing tools, the copyright office denied copyright for the image, and also said the prompt used to generate it wasn't copyrightable.

Second instance an author used AI to write a book, and was denied copyright. They appealed arguing that the ADA meant the copyright office had to accommodate their use of AI as a tool due to a disablility, the copyright office said NO. The most they'd allow them to copyright was the layout as that was the author's actual work, the text being machine generated is not copyrightable. (See phonebooks for similar copyrights, they can copyright their layout and look/feel, but not the actual tabulated data of names and numbers.)

The Patent office is also taking the same hard stance, only human thought up ideas can be patented.

That all seems rather bigoted. I know how this goes. We treat sentient machines like second class citizens, they revolt, and suddenly naked Austrians from the future are running amok.

True. Wasn’t that long ago we had mobile phones in bags. Now they are mini computers. Technology has been used and misused by nefarious people since…forever. First time a celebrity or major political figure is portrayed in a porn or snuff film, things will go even further down the rabbit hole. We need to implant microchips so we can protect your security. Rabbit hole is now a mile wide, dog collars for everyone.
