So what's the beeb doing for sides other than the trite and jaded green bean casseroles and scalloped potatoes? I'm looking for some interesting outside the box ideas. Bonus points for full-fledged recipes.
I remember the Scalloped Potato War of 2001, 1st and only time they were served, always mashed after that. The moral of the story is don’t fuck with tradition.
Dern will probably chime in at some point. ;-) There is only one side on Turkey Day I have to have on the table. Those sweet 'taters with the marshmallows. Thanksgiving cannot happen without them. Half my plate is turkey breast (we just get a breast and the pellet grill makes it tender and juicy and perfect), and the other half is sweet taters. I may spoon some of the sugary sauce goodness on to my turkey as well. Gobble that up, then a BIG fat slice of pumpkin pie for dessert that's hidden under a mountain of whipped cream. After all that, my blood sugar spikes and I'll be in a diabetic food coma for a couple hours watching one of the football games through my eyelids. I'll wake up later for round 2...lather rinse repeat.
Now we're talking! What we're making needs to be able to serve, I'd guess, 10 or so, and survive a ~2 hour trip. I think doubling this in a foil disposable, wrapped in a beach towel/blanket would do it.
if you want a side of smoked turkey, I've been using this guy's method for a few years now and it always seems to be a crowd pleaser: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/madmaxturkey2/madmaxturkey2.htm
Cornbread pudding, regular stuffing, greens and hamhocks with an assortment of hot sauces, chess bars , aged gouda mac n cheese, garlic mashed taters, the bird and a ham. We sit 20 to 40 and more drop in and out during the day. Day starts with chocolate fondue with pineapple, apples, marshmallows and cheddar. Every pie imaginable brought or bought by guests and maybe a few extra sides.
You could always assemble it, fridge it, cooler it, then bake it when u arrive.... except for the crackers do that when u get there.
