if one narrows the category enough... to "greatest free soloist of all time," Honnold stands out right now, though there are those who'd argue Bachar or Croft...
that said, Honnold isn't even the greatest current climber in any other rock climbing sub-discipline, let alone overall rock climber. and he's not even worth a mention as an all-around climber or alpinist.

Not to thread derail, but I read the article yesterday about the team of Sherpa's that are the first to summit K2 in the winter...just an amazing story. There's probably 20 Sherpa's that are better climbers than anyone else

 

a HUGE accomplishment and big deal historically. So exciting.

 

The cameramen are the ones that impress me, capturing the moment of the intrepid explorer cresting the summit...from the summit.

 

Arnold may be the muthafuckin’ GOAT of life in general! The list of this dude’s accomplishments in different fields is ridiculous.

 

That's kind of what I was doing. I don't really follow climbing all that much but I've yet to see anyone compare to him in free solo. Maybe it's due to my own ignorance, but I see that as his own discipline in the same way we may differentiate between roadracers, motocross, flat track, etc. Yea it's all motorcycle racing but the various disciplines are still worth differentiating.

They are GOAT not so much as first but as the guys who really controlled the plane in all 3 axis. They really figured it out.

 

I have been around the Beeb long enough that I had no expectations that it would stay on target. Just thought it might chew up some off-season bandwidth for folks and make for some interesting opinions and disagreements. If we all agreed this place would be boring.
