In FL motorists are supposed to give 3' of space when passing & share the road... aint no way Im trusting a strangers judgement to do any of that on roads without a bike lane.

I was in the area over Halloween enjoying some offroad fun, one day spent looping over McCullough Pass N and South. 95 is scary on a ADV bike with knobbies , the winds will move you a lot and stability at 80+mph more about general direction. It would be easy to have 60 mph closing speeds with bicycles. Nervous on a a MC, no way I'm getting near it on pedal power. RIP riders.
As a generalized statement it’s wrong. I’m sure it varies by state, county, etc. I’ve legally rode on the shoulder on I-5, I-15, US 395 and a few other western US highways. There are huge sections of I-10 and I-80 where you can ride too. The bicycle legal sections are signed as such. I avoid these sections if possible, but sometimes the interstate is the ONLY route through a pass. I’m guessing the bikes were very hard to see behind the follow vehicle, and the trucker was wrestling with the winds and his attention was diverted, maybe another vehicle obstructed his view. Light could’ve been in his eyes as well. Road cycling is dangerous, but you can minimize most of the risk with good route selection and riding very early / late. That said, every serious cyclist I know has been fucked up. If you spend a lot of time cycling, road or mountain, you WILL get hurt. Either accept it or don’t bother. Just like going to the racetrack.
The League of American Bicyclist” (LAB) and many other city/county/state bicycle organizations offer a class called “Bicycling 101”. It presents safety concepts, rights and responsibilities as well as “best practices” for entry - expert level bicyclists. If you ride a road bike this is like a safety/survival/legality all in one. The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition offers it “on line”.
Hardly. It primarily is the bicyclists that need to understand they are the chosen ones that get special treatment and don't have to follow rules and regulations of the road.
the beginning of I-10 is ~2 miles from my house. It has well marked bike lanes but its a very busy 10 lane road (4 of them turning) The pedestrian crosswalks are hilarious and the signal gives 30 seconds for them to cross the 10 lanes but you have traffic approaching from north & south. Almost guaranteed the motorists are looking to beat the light versus keeping eyes peeled for bikers or peds. Sure peds have the right of way but on a busy morning... I could see the crossing taking up to 4 light cycles if you can make it to the curbing on the turning lane. And there are kids that walk that route to the school about a 1/4 mile away. And no BS...when I pedaled to work Id experience road rage incidents from ignorant motorists. The only thing the road commute did was get me to do unintended intervals to catch the idiots at the next light and I was barely on any surface streets. The right turners were my fav... they pull up beside and try to do a time to distance calc then speed up to try to make the upcoming turn in my path
I love doing those unintentional intervals so you don’t die! Some roads are just horrible and should be avoided at all cost. Though often you can’t, like your I-10 feeder. Those right late turners are fucking retarded. They’re usually not too good at understanding physics. People will see a bike, not correctly ascertain the speed and rely on the meme of “bikes are slow”, not realizing how fast road bikes really are, then when they’re committed they have to accelerate a lot faster than they anticipated, come up to the turn faster than they thought and slam on their brakes to actually make the turn. Whenever someone does that shit I always hang back because I know they’ll have to slam the brakes. I think this is also a key factor in left hooks. There’s an unfortunate learning curve to road cycling where you eventually learn where to avoid and driver behaviors to be aware to, but it takes experience to do so, in which time you’re much more likely to get hurt. I’ve done so many miles by now that I’m fairly certain ESP is a thing.

I-10 is also Atlantic Blvd when its not a divided interstate. Same way Beach is US 90. Local cops cant do any accident reports... has to be State poopers. Alamacani elementary is 1/8th of a mile from Atlantic.
Agreed. But that doesn't mean people can't get educated. In Europe, people actually respect cyclists on the road and make sure they have plenty of room when passing them. Too bad North Americans (including Canadians) are so retarded in that matter. It shouldn't have to be that dangerous for road cyclists.
We solve that issue a long time ago by bolting a combustion engine to two wheels. You are never winning this argument with me. A pedal bike has no place on the road with cars and trucks.
