Wow.

 

It was "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District." Shosty hid a bunch of anti-totalitarianism and anti big-azz 9th symphony musical jokes in his 9th, tempting fate in the most dangerous way; Comical clutzy militaristic marches and shit. Miraculously, he survived Stalin unlike many Soviet artists.

 

I'm interested now. I'll check it out when I get home. I like people who (barely) walk the line under totalitarian regimes while surreptitiously nose thumbing the man.

Indeed (Da!), off the top of my head, I only have Tchaikovsky as a russian composer.....

 

Stravinsky liked to poke the sleeping bear on occasion as well. 1st time he performed Rite of Spring a riot broke out.

Speaking of the devil, if you guys haven't seen "The Death of Stalin" on Netflix, you need to see this right now. it's amazingly funny.
