I just watched the video of it on a Newsweek section. The parachute was ripped off when he was probably less that a couple hundred feet off the ground, right after launch. Nose first into the ground......Wow!
The first picture showing him working on his rocket with two hammers , one in each hand tells you all you need to know about this story
Didn't watch the video yet, but at any point in the recording were the following words uttered? "Here, hold my beer...." EDIT: just watched the vid. It's interesting, the small crowd of onlookers reaction to his imminent death sounds more like what you'd expect to hear at a frat party when one of the brothers dives from a second story window to crash through the beer pong table in the front yard on a drunken dare/bet.

So his chute somehow opened at launch? This folks is why they banned real lawn darts. When they say gonna send it the descend parts pretty important as well.
