Vodka, cause gin tastes like pine needles and James Bond drinks vodka martinis

I don't post often, but when I do, I recommend dry Tanqueray martinis course strained with a lemon twist. Olives can go to hell.

A martini is made with gin. Period. A drink with dry vermouth and something else is a something else martini, i.e., a vodka martini, a tequini (tequila and dry vermouth), etc. 10 or 12:1. Shaken over crushed ice, then poured with two queen olives in a chilled martini glass, admired and enjoyed immediately. No bullshit. It's the real thing. Instant clarity of vision.

The better question is what gin? I'm a Bombay fan. Sapphire Bombay is a marketing ploy: not worth the extra $$'s and frankly, not as tasty as regular Bombay. Hendricks is ok, but pricey. Tanqueray is nearly tasteless to me. A favorite, but impossible to find in bars, is Old St. Pete. One, because I grew up in St. Pete way back when and two, it has a distinct, different and enjoyable citrus bend to the flavor.

    Flame on.

    Cheers,

    Dave

I drank 6 apple martinis at the Navy Pier in Chicago in about 70 minutes some years ago. It was 11:00 am, and I hadn't eaten. I was still drunk at 8:00 that night going to dinner, and I haven't had one since.

    Little bastards were stout.

In the books, the Bond martini was gin AND vodka. They made a reference to it in Casino Royale, both when he ordered one on the plane and the fact it was named "Vesper" after a woman he had met, which was also the name of his love interest in the movie.

Dutch style gin does not. It's perfectly mild. Perfect for martinis and Tom Collins.

    And gin is vodka, anyway.

gin. if I wanted to drink something that only tasted like vermouth, id drink vermouth.

ive yet to come across a vodka where I thought, "u know this would be better if it had more flavor". the taste of vodka does nothing for me.

whiskey is oak flavored vodka. all distilled alcohols are ethanol with or without added flavor. so theres rly no point in going down that route.

I'm no expert- OK, no comments

I home brew beer, etc. Only drink quality designer types, like nice hoppy IPA's- NOT bitter ones.

Lately I've been drinking Jin Tonics, and you know, I like them! Just cheap gin and regular tonic water- works for me

Don’t forget the Lillet Blanc and lemon twist. It’s a great drink when made right.

I make a shitload of martinis at work so I get all kinds of instructions, but I’d say 95% are with vodka. Unless I’m told otherwise I give it a vermouth rinse, use a chilled glass, and shake or stir it. I think gin is better stirred and vodka better shaken so that’s what I give them. Like the margarita thread the main thing is to shake or stir it properly, a martini needs enough water and to be as cold as possible. Also, watch your bartender if you like them dry, I’d say at least half think that dry means more vermouth.

Personally I think they’re overrated, I’d rather have a Manhattan any day. If you like gin try a Martinez, it’s the predecessor to the martini and is really good.

    Tanqueray, olives. Dry.

Manhattan's a sort of a martini too. I like them with Maker's, not rye.

You mo-fo’s had my o-ding on margaritas with the other thread. I’ll be gawd damn if I’ll be caught drinking a martini in the safety of my own home.

Besides, I dont own any martini glasses.
