Damn dude, so sorry to hear about this. Just reading about it made my eyeballs hurt. I can't imagine how she felt. Hopefully she recovers quickly. Try to keep her spirits up as much as possible, that goes a long way IMO. Like most couples, I am sure she feeds off your emotions. If you try to make her realize that everything will be ok and life will go on as usual, it will probably help her a lot.
Depth perception with a single eye is not really a problem. The brain provides depth by interpreting views from two different eyes. It can do the same by interpreting two different views from the same eye. Basically, motion provides different inputs and the brain does its thing. I was a bit worried when my daughter started driving, but it has been a non-issue. Occasionally, I might have to help her with something very close and very small, like threading a needle. On a daily basis, you would absolutely not know that she is blind in one eye unless we told you.
Yup, close quarters, slow speed. Autobahn driving, varsity tennis, no problem. Parking garage, oops, endless number of bruises clanging into coffee table, walls etc. You adapt. Best wishes.
The pain level would have been off the charts. Damn just damn. I only see out of one eye but I never had 3D so l never lost it. Hopefully she’s stubborn and will push through the transition like a champ. There are groups that may be able to help make the transition. Good luck.
Wow. Sorry to hear, hoping the best for her recovery. It’s always crazy to hear about life changing consequences from household accidents. In about 5 years they’ll be able to give her a new eye better than OEM with infrared and x-Ray vision so she can see what you’re doing in the next room.
We had a follow-up with the retinal specialist this morning. No significant changes since last Monday. She can see some motion as well as light and dark out of the right eye. She lost some retinal tissue as a result of the injury, a hemorrhage inside her eye and the retinal tissue is "disorganized". We go back in two weeks for another look and to discuss surgical options and outcomes. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.
No pain to speak of, so she has avoided the Hydrocodone pills. Our Primary Care Dr. did give her something for anxiety and it has helped keep her calm.
Wow, way better than I thought it would be. Still doesn't sound great but seems like there might be a chance. If you need it we know really good eye peeps here, boss has had half a dozen surgeries for different things.
Damn. Just getting caught back up and saw this. My eyes teared up just thinking of this. Hopefully things start getting better and there is good news when you talk to the surgeon.
Sounds like she may ultimately be able to maintain some semblance of binocular depth perception. That’s a positive.
Man, sorry to read all this. Glad to hear there might be some positive ways forward. Hoping for the best for you all.
Time for an update... Retinal surgery was last Tuesday (06/12/19), lasted about 3 1/2 hours. They had to remove the lens of her eye, tack the retina in place with a laser, replace the fluid with silicon oil and then button things up. She was miserable in the extreme for a couple days, pain and having to spend the next week to 10 days face down so the bubbles in the oil will float to the back of her eye and exert pressure on the retinal tissue so it will reattach to the back of the eye. On the positive side, the day after surgery, she was able to make out the largest line on an eye chart in spite of having no lens. Prior to the surgery it had reached the point where all she could discern was light and dark and the direction of an intense light source. It has improves since then with the surgeon saying the results looked promising. It will be a months long process and she will have to wear an external lens, but not to shabby considering. We don't know how much her vision will improve, but it is already better than before. Yay. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.
