I wouldn’t hesitate to replace the transmission. That truck has a ton of life left in it and you’re not buying the equivalent anywhere else for that high number of $5200. It’ll be a great truck for your son.

A good, independent tech should be able to do it in under 3hrs, working casual and with breaks. Based on that, $5200 seems absurd. Surely, there’s an honest guy in your neighborhood.

As others mentioned, plug the trans cooler ports on the radiator. Grab an aftermarket option (Four Seasons #53008 at $52) off Amazon. They come with everything needed to splice them onto the factory lines.

Do NOT even think about Jasper Engines and Transmissions, whether you’re doing the deal or the shop is. They have a terrible reputation, these days. Contact a Nissan transmission specialist like CDT. They can get you squared away.

This. The stuff from Jasper is very good (and only a 45 minute drive away!:D).

Thanks. Y'all have been Major help. I found an alternative. Ive dealt with an independent shop for years for normal stuff. My parents were customers. Been in business for prolly 60 years. But he didn't have an in shop transmission guy. He just shopped those out. But now they've got their own guy. I sent him the quote with parts list etc and he said he'd match it even with the warranty. 12 mos or 12k miles. $3700. I'm doing this. He cut me slack cause he knows my whole family but he won't admit it. He's a good old dude. I'm glad I checked with him.

    I’m glad your happy.

I could build a pretty bad ass power glide for $3700 though. Like 1500-2000hp ready.

The fact a 4speed Nissan slush box cost that much to redo....
Those Nissan clutches and bands must be made of unicorn horns, leprechaun skin and lubricated from the tears of Nancy Pelosi.

That seems a bit expensive still, but if you were to go vehicle hunting with $3700 in your pocket, I doubt you would find your boy anything as dependable.

Bring a case of beer over to Nigel's house and let his son fix it, I hear he's handy with a wrench.

BTW Rockauto also has the entire rebuilt transmission for $2500 (well 3500 but $1000 is the core charge that would be refunded)

For the record, I talked to Nissan a year ago. No dice. It is what it is. Still a solid truck. I'm fixing it and keeping it.

Those vehicles are known for radiators coolers to split inside.
A shotglass of water will kill any automatic trans. It eats the glue the clutch material is bonded with.
Get an external cooler and plug up hole in radiator.
Trans need a rebuild and depending on yr may need a new valvebody with a flash.
Thats why its so expensive because valve body is 1000s there abouts and dealer is only place to get one that will actually work.
    And fluid is also special.
In Houston at my shop we do whole job for 3500 complete.
    Hope that helps.
Beware of cheap prices because work will be shortcut and quality go hand in hand.
