Experiences with Massage Therapy

Starting with my very first experience, which was two weeks ago, seems like I'm already developing some kind of injury as a result. It was definitely a deep tissue massage judging by how hard the therapist was pressing on certain parts of my body, lower back and calf were the highlights in terms of pain. During the session I was told that I had knots/stiffness in these areas and that's why applying pressure made them hurt. The pain stiffness gradually increased until it got to a point where it was pretty severe, 8/10. Then it went down to a 2/10 the next day and is been like that for the last 2 days.

Anyways, I'm going to a sports physician because that's the soonest I can get to see some sort of specialist who might be able to figure out what's going on. I feel like shit because of the possibility of this turning into something serious.

    Experiences/advice?

Probably a fluke, but I went to a deep tissue lady that was highly recommended. She screwed me up for about 6 months...a lot worse than I was.

Tried accupuncture after that ~ 5 times. Couldn't tell any difference, so I just went to work and have slowly improved. But, mine is mostly just getting old.

The point of the massage is to loosen muscles. They may not have gotten to the root of the problem yet. E.g. you'd be surprised at how much lower back pain can be traced to the feet. So they should be talking through what they are doing and looking for above what you are telling them is hurting. Now, I can't say whether they are doing their job right or not. I'd recommend a sports med PT masseuse.

I'm coming at it from the perspective of getting good treatment that significantly helped me.

    Chiropractor.
It ain't just about joint alignment. Muscles can pull things out of alignment causing pain. Those muscles need to be put in their place, not just tenderized.

For me chiro didn’t do shit, I had massive trigger points in my trapezius muscles causing major pain. For 2 months it kept getting worse until I went to see a massage therapist who after two sessions had me feeling better

You really need both, plus a lot of work on your part to do daily stretches and exercises to correct the imbalances that are causing the pain.

Definitely staying out of the chiropractor conversation this time. :D

My girlfriend is a massage therapist specializing in sports recovery, so I get massages pretty regularly. With the right therapist it’s a game changer. It’s a lot of pain and not much fun, but my body works much better when I let her do her thing once a week.

Look into Thai massage. It’s mostly assisted stretching and is awesome for mobility.

    You did it? Bad experience?

People I know who did it said it was amazing. I personally know 3 and have heard about two others second hand

  14. Yeah, lots of people believe all kinds of stupid sh@t works.

Numerous studies have shown no meaningful benefits, and it can also have negative effects. It is considered to be a pseudoscience.

But maybe Alignment of your Structural Integration(tm) is exactly what you need :D

Can you point me to one of these numerous studies that show negative effect? I probably don't want to do it if that's the case.

    Have you tried it?

I'm not internet fighting, just want to see what you've seen to make a more informed decision.

  16. I have not tried it. I have tried other non-traditional and non-Western techniques to alleviate recurring back pain, and only one has ever made a difference outside of medically accepted techniques (a skilled chiropractic practitioner). My daughter‘s swim coach in the US is a „certified“ Rolfing therapist? technician? voodoo worshipper? When he tried to explain the concept of „aligning Structural Integration,“ it quickly became clear to me that it is quackery.

You can find studies that show no benefit + potential negative results, and a lot of anecdotes from enthusiastic Rolfing fans, if you search.

It’s complete and utter horseshit. You can’t loosen fascia, you cant rearrange muscle, and you sure as hell cant align your body with the gravitational pull of the earth.

Too bad it’s not real because it would render arm pump surgery unnecessary...

  18. Oh, come on! Gravity is Just A Theory. Magical Thinking overcomes all that paltry sciency nonsense!

I've seen similar stories synonymous with deep tissue massage, there has to be a reason for it.

    Never doing acupuncture, just never.

That's just it, there was no problem to begin with. I only went in for relaxation.

How hard were the strokes being used? Did you feel considerable pain during and/or after?

First time hearing about Thai massage will look into it.

Now this is for anyone whoever finds themselves coming across something called KKT Therapy. Saw positive reviews as well as clinics all over the world. Went in for a visit, guy attaches a device to the top of my shoulders and says, see the needle? Your shoulders aren't aligned, same with the hips. So he says my spine is out of alignment and that I have a disc issue. I never listened to anything else that came out of his mouth after that and told him I don't buy it. The premise behind the treatment is a device that takes 'x-rays' which are sent to a lab, analyzed and then a software file is sent to the administrator so he can upload it into the machine which shoots sound waves into your spine to trigger collagen growth regeneration. How quickly he diagnosed my issue as a disc is what made me walk out the door.

  20. Acupuncture is a proven therapy, for people who believe it will work.

It did nothing for me. Maybe I just don’t believe enough.
