I am building a 1993 ZX7 racebike… I've got a factory bits and stuff that I had saved from the superbike I raced way back when. This past weekend I departed the flooding here in Nebraska and drove to Chicago and picked up a rolling chassis and engine separately on my two day trip. Hoping that I can get this bike together in at least ridable order by the end of June for a race I just found out about 3 hours away from me at Heartland Park (ahrma). Now the hard part.. a shock for racing... who can point me in the right direction? Ohlins and Penski don't list a shock for a 1993 zx7 anymore. Is there something similar off another bike that will work? There are a shit ton of ohlins shocks on evil bay to choose from, just not my specific one. Surely somebody can remember something that would work? It doesn't have to be perfect as I don't care about battery boxes being in the way or anything like that..
I would bet that finding a used Fox or Ohlins and having it refurbished will be your most reasonably option. BTW - Pic of the project please
I'll work on pics.. just unloaded my truck last night. Got a box of parts, polished chassis, pm chicanes, 2 broke engines and another I'm crossing my fingers will run, muzzy exhaust along with the bits I've had in boxes for over 20 years off my original bike. Like I said, I'll put any shock on the bike, it doesn't have to be model specific, I just don't know what different shocks from other bikes may work.. I'll move stuff around to make one work.. there are lots of used ohlins out there for other bikes. Or that one zx7 one one of you guys have on the shelf at home.. I've got cash!
Contact Dan Anderson at Traxxion Dynamics or Eric Trinkley at Penske. Either one of them can get you set up with a Penske. Just because an application isn’t in a catalog, doesn’t mean they don’t have the components to build the shock; it only means they’re not on the shelf and ready to ship. Last year, Eric built me 2 different custom shocks and had them shipped, the following day.
@milroyjr Call David Behrend at Fast Bike Industries at 828-435-0125 http://www.fastbikeindustries.com/ He's the US importer for Nitron and deals with Ohlins and Andreani. I'd be willing to bet he can get you fixed up.
Hit the ZX forums as there a newer bike shocks that a direct bolt ons with some modding of the battery box.
I have a Nitron on my 92 and I really like it They can spring it for your weight and a good people to deal with
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I called Penske and they are building me a shock. Here is an updated photo of my day today. Fitted the chicanes, now to continue to diassemble. Turning this thread into a build thread now
Engine and exhaust installed. Rear brake cleaned, bled and new pads installed. Waiting for Shiny new parts to arrive to continue.
Shop I used to work at and race with had them stashed in the attic. He had them for another project and never got used. Was telling him about my new project and he offered them to me. I got really lucky cause I didn’t even know he had them.
I just landed a 1989 Zx7 and would love to find more information on it. Any tips? Mine is complete but hasn't run in 5 years. Carbs were removed and cleaned before storage and the tank is dry as well.
