I disagree with that assessment of what it was. The design was race proven. Those things worked, and made a lot of power. The main reason the design wasn't successful was that it was banned by the FIM. I think the street bike wasn't so much about design study as it was about showcasing Honda's capabilities. Bragging rights, if you will. They were just building a display model that happened to move. I could be wrong. I just made up all of the above on the spot. They priced it as high as they thought they could get away with without people with more money than brains realizing they were being taken for a ride.
hey they said they same thing about the price of the nsx. it being a 6cyl and all. but its now looked at as an automotive marvel. if by race proven, you are referring to the nr750 endurance racer being successfull? I dont recall that or the nr500 being successfull. isnt that why they went back to two strokes? I do agree in showcasing the capabalites but believe there was some design study in there as well as a lot of what was learned (good and bad) was used on honda motorcycles henceforth.
Yeah, I was thinking about the Suzuka racer. And I meant "successful" in the sense that it wasn't just a showpiece, but an actual race bike. Who knows what would have happened if the rules had not gotten rid of the technology? Oh, and I don't think the NSX was too expensive for what it was. It was too expensive for a Honda. Kind of like VW trying to sell both the Polo in the Phaeton. That just doesn't compute in the public's mind. No matter how good the car is. Personally, I would have taken one (NSX) over a 348 any day.
I was at a sandcastle building competition that was sponsored by the hospital at which my wife did her residency at....she and a friend of hers was in our elise and i was in the NSX with one of my friends....She caught a lot of grief from her coworkers about driving an elise on the beach as it was a lotus and was told to just bring just the NSX next time as it was "just an acura"
