My understanding is that it isn't legal for any current race series though. Maybe one or two millionaires will make it a track day toy but most will just sit and collect dust. A shame really.

That's what coachbuilding is. No different than what Ferrari has been doing for years, especially with their one-off 458 variants, of which there have been many......

 

I guess if you need to make up a billion dollars in fines and settlements from your VW group dieselgate issues then bringing it back in as $600k in profits from each of 77 cars is one way to go about it.
