Noise canceling phone headsets

Corded, or Bluetooth. In-ear, or over? Boom mic, or not?

I just want to be legal in Illinois, not piss people off I'm talking to, & be able to hear what they say to me.

Bluetooth can be a pain to keep charged, & suck my phone's battery dry, in my past experience.

I want something that works when I need it. Need them for the kids, too.

    Music not a consideration.

    Thanks!

I have the Bose over ears QC15 that I use for travel. When I was looking to replace them I tried a bunch (wanted the Klipsch) I ended up buying. . . another set of QC15s.

No interest in bluteef or any of that garbage, the corded Bose worked best for me.

I've got a set of BT over the ears, they're good but not as good on sound cancelling as the Bose. Still worth it for no cord.

Well what's funny is he put noise cancelling in which I don't think is really what he's looking for since the rest seems like phone call stuff and noise cancelling isn't an issue there.

I've got an Avaya wireless headset that I use at work and it works very well.

On a phone headset, do you want a noise canceling microphone, a noise canceling receiver, or both?

I use a Motorola H730 BT ear bud. It has a noise canceling mic, and it's decent in reasonable conditions (car with windows up, large rooms, small crowds).

I admit that I haven't read up on all of the technologies employed to allow others to hear my voice & for me to understand what others say to me.

I just know when driving, especially at freeway speeds, I have often had to remove virtually every phone earpiece I have tried to date. This also happens sometimes when I'm working at home & I create too much noise.

Good to know that there is noise cancelling technology for both the microphone, (which I considered to be the primary culprit,) and the speaker.

There are a lot of them out there, & I tend to start my research here, at the all mighty 'Beeb. I then narrow down my choices from those recommended by my discerning 'peers' here.

Thanks for the information & suggestions thus far. I'll read up on these.

I've started using a Plantronics Voyager BT headset for phone calls (I travel a lot, work from home, and spent a lot of time on the phone) and I'm quite impressed. Call quality is great, no complaints on the other side of the phone either...reasonably comfortable (ear gets a little tired of it after a few hours) and good battery life.

The downside is it sucks for listening to music, so I still carry wired headphones.

It is illegal to use over the ear headphones while driving in Illinois.

It is not legal to use headphones, but a headset or handsfree is required to talk on the phone in IL.

The no headphones law was passed many years ago, and was aimed at idiots driving around wearing their Koss Pro4AA's and blasting their ears off listening to their 8-tracks, blocking out all other sound, and then hitting people/things. It was an expose by a Chicago TV station during a TV ratings period that got that law passed.

Although you can get a ticket anytime anywhere for just about anything, I don't think most LEO's will write you for a single earpiece with a boom mic, unless you were doing something else as well. (Ignoring the DWB exception)

The best choice by far is theBoom by UmeVoice, if you don't mind having a visible microphone across your face. It's expensive but the noise cancelling and sound quality is absolutely top-notch.

The BoomE is the one I use and prefer in the car, it is wired so I never have to worry about charging it and I can drive with stereo blasting and/or windows down on the freeway and speak in a normal voice and the person on the other end doesn't hear ANYTHING but my voice and thinks I am sitting in a quiet office. Plus the in-ear speaker is great and you can turn it up to any volume you need to hear the other person even when there is tons of noise around you. It also works at the racetrack and once I took a business call in a casino with slot machines dinging all around me and no one was ever the wiser. :)

They also make a Boom W which is a bluetooth wireless version; works great but I preferred wired for the car so I never have to worry about charging the headset.

I agree with you Beac. The OP asked about over the ear. My neighbor
is a State LEO. He says he pulls over everyone with over the ear
    that's his probable cause.

This was a concern of mine as about 420 miles of my 812 mi. trips are in IL.

Thanks for all of the feedback. May have to 'negotiate' some to justify theBoom, but quality of conversation is my goal, so thank you, Hotfoot.
I'll check out the other recommended ones for the rest of the family.

We drive older cars, so none have Bluetooth built in. With family in IL, perhaps a simple IPhone holding mechanism will be necessary, along with some more research of the specifics of the new laws there.

    Thanks again, folks.

I've been using a Delton X10 and have been happy with it. Cost about 20 bucks. BT, over the ear, boom mic and noise cancelling. It stays charged a long time, too.

Look at putting a BT ready radio in the car, they work really well and most come with great mic's. Last I looked they were getting cheap too.

Absolute necessity when flying for more than an hour. A very good "do not talk to me" symbol on a flight.

This. I just put a Pioneer AppRadio in my car. Love it. Handsfree phone, bluetooth streaming. It even displays the Waze app on the 7" display and allows me to control it via touch on the screen. Have backup camera too.

    Cost 299 at Crutchfield.

Give the Plantronic's series of Bluetooth headsets a shot.

If you are on a budget, the Discovery 975 can be found for about $60
    - Comes with a caring case that also recharges to ear piece. I find i get about 3 hours of talk time before the headset needs a charge. Takes about 2hrs to recharge from dead.
    - Noise cancellation is good and I stopped using my vehicle's bluetooth phone connection as people can hear me better with the headset.

I recently upgraded to the new Plantronics Voyager Edge. The sound clarity is defiantly better, especially in a noisy environment like an airport.
    - Battery life is just as good, maybe a bit better.
    - The carrying case is not as nice as the 975, but that's just me.

If you don't mind full size, the Plantronics Voyager Legend has the best sound quality and can be gotten for around $75 or so.
