In PA it's part of the sales agreement that tells you the house is part of an HOA. You have to be provided the bylaws and covenants and have 5 days afterwards to void the contract. If you don't void the contract in that time period you have agreed to the covenants.

Overly crazy BoD is shitty but most of them in this area are pretty low key. They basically keep people from turning their homes into unmaintained dumps.

    Marietta, GA HOA

When I moved into my house in 99 in a nice subdivision with HOA, didn't think much of 'em. Built a mini MX track in the back yard and we would have throwdowns on the 50's and 110's. Nothing terribly crazy. Got letters from HOA, ignored them. Had HOA folks come in my yard, I didn't know who they were, and gently escorted them off the property using my second amendment rights. Got served and an official lien put on my house.

HOA no joke and at least in my situation in GA they can and will put a lien on the house. Needless to say covered up track and still do occasional ride-thrus in the hood.

Place where my brother used to live was in a HOA, it was a bad joke. Neighbor on one side rented out his house, registered sex offender moved in along with 7 or 8 other people. Power and water were regularly turned off because the bills weren't paid, back yard was full of trash and old furniture, dead cars in the front yard, grass never cut, etc.. Across the street was another house turned into a rental, approximately 15 people relocated from Mexico to that residence. They started a manufacturing facility in that house building "lawn art" out of rebar and spray paint, I sh*t you not there were 4 or 5 15 ft. tall pink flamingos in the front yard.

Meanwhile, my brother is fined by the HOA because his mailbox is 2 inches too close to the street and his sod had some weeds in it. His head exploded.

    +1

As long as it's not terribly smelly or noisy I don't care what you do.

I like bikes, but wouldn't want to listen to a bunch of motorcycles going around a track outside my bedroom every day.

I'm not only a member but I'm also the President......

I used to be the VP of a HOA back in Phoenix, I got voted in only because no body else wanted the responsibilities. Pretty much bullshit rules and what not, held some quaterly meetings out by my pool over beers just to discuss the usual such as weeds growing too tall, someone broke a park gate.....

Also was a secretary of another HOA, that job was a little bit more involved, had to get bids from different landscape companies, painters, etc, cut payments to vendors.

Both of those HOA's were pretty good in terms of power trip control issues.

The town I live in now (Sewall's Point Fl) has some crazy HOA type restrictions for the whole town, Can't park an trailer, RV or boat visibly on your property, no commercial signed vehicles of any size, No pick up trucks at all. No commercial trucks are allowed to be parked in the town after 5pm.

Maybe I'll run for town council:beer:

No way in hell I'd live in or near that kind of town. I understand using some common sense but if the site of a pickup truck offends where a mommy van doesn't then screw that shit. I'll take my tax money elsewhere.

There's another side to HOAs that people are missing. Not so much the silly rules and fines, but the responsibility of the common grounds and structures. More relevant in condo/townhouse/building situations. But even single family neighborhoods might have common sewers or water mains that are managed by the HOA.

For condos, these HOAs can actually be the owners of the outside of your home, foundation, utilities, and even your windows. Nice to know that someone is taking care of them, but remember, these are 'managed' by volunteers. Some with little, if any experience at all. In other words, there's lots of room for corruption and mismanagement of money.

If I lived in a complex that had most of the structure and systems ran by the HOA, i'd be very careful on who they are, and what they're doing. Remember, they also have the power to raise the fees, or really mess things up. And no, they can't come collecting their fees, but try selling your home and see what happens.

I don't want common grounds or structures. I don't want a community pool. The city/county/state has parks I already pay for.

Condos are an entirely different deal altogether.

Exactly. HOAs exist due to morons like Dave.

Anyway: For those of us who live in subdivisions, HOAs are a good thing. Renting drives down property costs and tends to attract no-so-classy people. I paid a lot of money for my home. I do not want commercial vehicles, 4wheelers or a spare tire sitting in my neighbor's yard. If I wanted all of that, I'd go rent near Section 8 housing (or move there :D )

That doesn't sound bad to me at all. I wish my HOA was a bit stricter. We have 1 or 2 hillbillies in our neighborhood, with loud exhaust systems on their trucks. I guess going loud and slow is something to be proud of. Not suprisingly, they also own Harleys

I'm certain that there's also a No BBS clause in rules and reg's...

I have to access the board via my work comp, they'd burn me at the stake if they knew of the evil doer's that I communicate with.

Lot's of really old white crusty republicans in this town but they're dying off and the newbies are taking over

    Probably.

Still couldn't survive the transition to reasonable people, no way.

Ours has that in regard to commercial vehicles. It's not enforced though - I can't see how it really can, when people running their own business have to park somewhere. I know they signed up for the HOA, but still.

We have someone in the front of the sub with a brick mailbox that got knocked down/blown up from someone running into it weeks ago. The mess of bricks has sat there and the lazy owners haven't touched it. I'm almost hoping the association hasn't said anything to them, since I will need to heat cycle the engine on the bike soon. :)

HOA s are unregulated cities. I almost moved into one, thank God I didn't.
