Watching track safety YouTube by Simon Crafar got me to thinking... Other than the obvious Laguna and COTA, what tracks either are suitable for WSBK/MotoGP, or could be with a reasonable amount of effort? The quality of the track itself, the facilities, etc. 2019 MotoAmerica Road Atlanta, Braselton, Georgia Yes - Circuit of The Americas, Austin, Texas VIRginia International Raceway, Alton, Virginia Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin Utah Motosports Campus, Grantsville, Utah Yes - WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Monterey, California Sonoma Raceway, Sonoma, California Pittsburgh International Race Complex, Wampum, Pennsylvania New Jersey Motorsports Park, Millville, New Jersey Barber Motorsports Park, Birmingham, Alabama 2020 Ridge Motorsports Park, Shelton, Washington Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis, Indiana others?
Motogp: Laguna really isn't suitable for motogp anymore. Really, you have Indy and Austin. Almost every place else has something that would prevent motogp from going there in the modern day. WSBK: Maybe add Utah to the list. Laguna because of history and the racers like it but that's turning a blind eye to some issues there. Maybe Road America and Brainerd (both with some work) I guess. I've only seen the Ridge on TV and it seems great for club and maybe MA but is looks narrow and some parts a bit "sketchy."
Yeah, I've never been and I forget there really isn't anything near by. Imagine MotoGP at VIR? Holy f@ck, I love that place but can you see the teams staying at the holiday Inn in SoBo and everyone hitting Aunt Millie's after practice on Friday night or celebrating their win on Sunday there?
All the teams staying at the lodge (and maybe the houses) and hitting the Inn for dinner? We almost got tossed but that was because of Buck but we were tame. Rossi at Millies? Awesomeness!
Forget Road America. They would have to move the railroad tracks to make it meet the safety standards and you don't move RR tracks without way more money than we are talking about in Road Racing. Well F1 possibly could afford to move the RR tracks if they wanted to badly enough, but that would never happen.
Maybe it's better now that Bernie is gone but F1 is a guaranteed money loser. Not small money but Millions. You have to have local and state (and in some cases Federal) government support to break even. Well, you could also have "less then legal" money backing it but that's another story. I was talking with a dude the other month and he was doing a fact gathering about doing a track here in NoVa. I about pissed myself in laughter when he asked me what I thought. He got mad when I told him he was wasting his company's time and money even considering it.
You should have reminded him that we have one, but it is barely safe enough for Spec Miata. Don't even think about motorcycles on it even for a track day. Personally I am shocked they actually even got that built and I am betting it is losing money. If they get a good amount of spectators back to oval, the drag strip and concerts going again, they may make it.
Dominion Raceway. They have a "Road Course", but it is basically lined with enough Armco to make Summit Point Shenny look safe in comparison. Also a little farther out, so yeah, not really NoVa.
