I call bullshit on that one. I've been looking at the date on every coin that I have in my hands since 1979-something... Current year mintage don't even show up until May or so, and even then they don't make up a huge chunk of what you see. No single year really does.

    Except for 1964 nickels.

    Calling bullshit on your bullshit.

"The problem is two-pronged: The U.S. Mint significantly reduced its production of coins after implementing safety measures to protect its employees from the coronavirus. Consumers are also depositing fewer coins at U.S. financial institutions, according to the Federal Reserve."

I like to pay for small items like restaurant bills, hardware, etc with cash. The change I get goes into my pocket and onto my dresser when I get home. I rarely remember to put a few coins in my pocket in the morning so when the pile gets too big it goes into the change bucket. I'll bet I've got 2 or 3 hundred dollars in there. It's so much I dread having to count it out and put it into paper rolls. My bank doesn't take loose change. I think I'll pour cement on the whole mess and use it to hold down my canopy at the track.......

I call bullshit on the bullshit call of my bullshit.... :D

Given that the first prong is a blatant crock, since we already know that current year coins are not a large portion of the circulation at any given time, why would we believe the second prong is any more viable?

You go ahead and believe what you are told even though you already know that you are being lied to, though. ;)

PS... In 2009,the mints drastically reduced production. Why? The financial crisis had people cashing in their piggy banks in record numbers. Hmmmm... I seem to recall that record numbers of folks were recently added to the unemployment rolls. Seems logical to me that they would be cashing in those coins stashes now, as well.

This won't format very well, but you can get the same data here:

Except in 2009 people were not worried about getting Covid when they stepped into a bank to mess with depositing them. Also more banks took coins back then.

How many coins short does it take for there to be a shortage? Do you know how close we run to the limit on coins in circulation? Find some stats on that and bring your BS back then. Maybe we have a 1% buffer in coins. So a 0.5% production loss from the mint and 1% hoarding / not spending means we are 0.5% short. That means a lot of people are not getting their change: 1 in 200 then multiply by the total cash transactions per week that involve change in the US and you get a very big number.

A buddy of mine had a glass one full to the neck. Went to move it and, as he started to lift it, the bottom fell out.

I had a glass carboy break on me, the thick glass is extremely sharp and you will bleed just looking at it.
