This is probably the 50th AST I’ve rescued from certain death on the road /trail/Highway with my hands. The secret is checking the reach of their mouth with a stick or similar before lifting them by the shell. It hasn’t failed me yet. The claws on their feet/rear legs can do some damage as well if you grab them too far back.
