From Dave's vivid description when he got back, I didn't really have any feeling it was something I lusted to do either...thanks for conformation.

Its a bucket list thing. That's all. The end of the road is kinda anti-climatic. There's no Arctic Ocean, either, unless you sign up for a bus ride and get a security clearance.

I have been there and have ordered a ton of stuff from them. They rock.

Congrats! I came super close to making that same decision a couple years ago. The bike was out in Arkansas, and I just couldn't convince myself to make the trip. It seems like a damn hilarious bike to do stupid things with. Is it hard to get a skid plate for it? I know the exhaust is underslung, making it a little more precarious than the Superenduro.

Sorry, I rode her to bike night last night so I didn't see this til now!

Funny you mention it, because a skid plate is high on my list. One thing I'm finding is that parts for this bike are much harder to find than the SE or Adv version. Now there might be parts that fit all of them but the other two are so dirt oriented that a lot don't fit the SM. I'm liking the bike...can't say that I'm totally in love with it. The Akra's are almost stupid loud since the PO took out the baffles and discarded them. I'll keep it for a while and see what happens. My son is moving back to Louisville (hopefully) in June and he really wants to ride it a bit. But I'm still going to get a DR650...just not a $4K one...probably more like a $2500 one.

I’m starting to think adding a Adventure bike to the stable would be a good idea, kinda leaning toward a Tiger 800 mainly because I just don’t like the feel of a Vtwin or parallel twin either for that matter. Want to take a few trips out west in the next few years and not be limited to pavement plus there is TONS of stuff around here I would like to ride.
Anybody had good success with one or is the other stuff just that much better?

IMO it depends on how much you are leaning toward gnarly stuff. Many options, many variables. I found what suits me. I like naked, has 300 mi. range, I can moto camp it, capable of doing a lot of off highway rides, I can pick it up loaded cuz I ride alone and I fall off a lot. Those other bikes are just too damned heavy when loaded and a dirt bike ride on the highway sucks.

My riding buddy put 50,000 miles on his older 800 with no problems. The newer 800xc looks way more capable. Although the used Ktm adventures are a lot of bike for the money. That’s the route I went. No regerts.

‘15 800XCx, with about every farkle one would want. Zero issues.

You want a 2015 or newer, because they’re RBW, electronic cruise control, WP suspension (XC, XCx, XCa), and other amenities. You need to research package content, because equipment varies between them (3-letter suffix bikes have more stuff).

The 2015-2017 are known to have soft suspensions, so they need a rework. Mine was sagged out so bad on the frontend, it would go into a weave that would intensify (lacking trail). The factory rate was .45 and switched to .80, now. A respring and revalve of F&R is ~$800, through Mike’s Dirt Bike Suspension (ADV suspension specialist), with him doing everything while I waited.

Are any ADV bikes better? For offroad, nothing is going to touch any of the KTM variants, 790 and up. BMW are headaches (worst reliability in the industry) and would never consider one. Honda AT is a really nice bike and from what people report, you either like it or grow bored with it. A lot of new ones sure hit the classifieds early in ownership. They look awesome, though. VFR800X is a complete pig and expensive, no cruise, but, does have a V-4. Yamaha S10 is widely loved by their owners. Not the most powerful, shaft-drive, cruise control, reliable, heavy. I’m stoked for the T7, but, no cruise control is a letdown. Maybe, they’ll release an upmarket version. Guzzi 850 is intriguing. They’re shaft-drive, cruise control, nice looking, IMO. Suzuki V-Stroms are a great bike. But, no cruise control until the highest spec bike of this year, which is like $17K(?). Very reliable, suspensions are a letdown, offroad. Ducati are an unknown for me, as I don’t follow them.

I don’t know, man. Different strokes for different folks. If you’re wanting an inline, you’re kind of limited to Triumph. I traded a Tiger 1050 for the XCx, because I wanted cruise control, feet more forward, and this engine is just like the 675; rev-happy and playful. The 1050/1200 is a lot more like a diesel; more coarse vibes, big torque, more purposeful I guess, and top-heavy. The 21”/17” wheel combo rides a lot better and has a more solid feel on crappy roads than 19”/17” or 17”/17” combos. It’s the best all-around bike I’ve ever owned or ridden. If you were in central IL, I’d let you come take mine home for a few days.

I feel the same way about my ‘11XR, even lacking the refinements of the 15+

I test rode new ‘11 (venom yellow :Putter:) and ‘14 XR’s. My issue was the Showa suspension was a bit of a letdown, because I had AK-20’s and an 8983 on my 1050. The 1050 was like a gentleman’s express and the 800 just didn’t convey the same overall quality, to me. So, dealer owner says he’ll smoke me a deal on his last ‘15 XCx, because he knew I really wanted WP and cruise control, if I was going trade. Smoke a deal he did. I didn’t even ride the bike and straight bought it, because that was going to be my only chance to get an XCx for the difference he offered.

You owe it to yourself to ride a newer bike. They’re SOOOO nice. I stay off the brand new 800, because I hear it’s even better yet, by those trading up. And, I can’t afford one, anyway, especially the new NEW 900.

i threw springs and oil at the front end and it’s plenty alright for low skill set. It’s owned out right and so good. The differences arn’t wort the cost of the upgrade.

Man what is the deal with used 1200 Tigers? I have been looking hard for a 12&up for a few months now and I can’t find anything around the 7k or so range. Everything for sale seems like it’s either brand new, or 11 and older. I have my heart set on that bike and that year range. I’ve seen more than a few that sold for mid-sevens in old posts on ADV rider and EBay. Wrong time of year, I know, but it just seems like there isn’t much out there. There are a million 800’s for sale though, it seems.

I’m kinda stuck in a inline engine. Cruise doesn’t matter to me, nothing else I own has it. Not planning on doing any knarly singletrack.... but I don’t turn around very often either.
Plan on more on road and mild off road stuff but want the ability to follow a seductive trail when the urge hits.
Will do the suspension regardless, i’m 250ish so everything is too soft for me so that doesn’t make any difference to me.

I’d look for the most frakled well cared for bike you can find. XC or XR really wont mater much unless you have an aversion to tubes on a street bike. The tire selection in 19” DS tires is pretty dang good.
