Anyone know of a shop of person that is old enough and familiar with the dual 2-barrel set up on an 86 GS550ES? I either have a carb issue or ignition problem. I have exhausted my knowledge.
    Thanks

All pro powersports in huntsville. Ask for Sam he has been in since early 80's and enjoys vintage work. Barring parts available issues and your budget he can help you out.

I had that bike for years.. what issues are you having?
Let me guess turns over- but will not start- all seems normal?
It’s the ignitor. Like a ECU under the side panel , sealed metal box. Replaced mine at least once.

I was able to get one from a scrap bike.. if you have access to another GS swap this and see if this is the problem.

I ordered a module, I do get good spark to the plugs. I have sent carbs to GS specialist- all ok. So it is either ignition (what about signal generator) or valve adjustment/timing?

I sent the carbs to the main GS carb guy there, he went through and blueprinted the carbs but could find no obvious issue.

They worked on it the last two times, good people, I talked to Ashley, super GS knowledgeable, got it back in same condition as I dropped it off in they broke the instrument cluster lens- I just sourced a new one and replaced instead of being "that" guy. I took it back even, no improvement $500 down the drain.

I had the valves adjusted less than 500 miles in one of the many repair attempts, the quality of work is unknown, they also cleaned and adjusted carbs (one of more than 5 times in 5 years), it was at the selling sealer so you would think they would know the bike (as in sold it new). What what the symptoms of the valve out of adjustment be. Also. if anyone knows, the dual pole coils once taken off, has a + and - imprint for the wires. The FSM show two different views of how the wires are to be hooked up, one view in ignition and one different view in the schematics at the back of the manual. The positive are orange the others two are black and one is white. The orange was on the negative coil imprint. I asked the guy from the GSResources, he said since it was dual pole and the windings were in the middle, it really didn't matter the hookup of the wires. The coils ohm at 4k.

My first race bike was an ‘83 550 ES (same bike 83-86). That carb set up is goofy to say the least. This may be way off regarding suggestions, but the only fueling issue I had was OEM vacuum fuel supply/petcock failed. I replaced with Pingel and never had another issue.

I always wanted to have intakes made and put a rack of flatslides on it. Always thought that 16v baby 1150 had a lot of potential that the stock carb set up restricted.

FYI - if you want better choices for tires, Katana 600 front end and rear are bolt on and allow 17” rubber.

I am interested in changing rear shock to a direct bolt on....and to tell you how serious I am in getting this bike right. I ordered ( and it has arrived) a NOS petcock for the bike.

I never got around to it, but the eye to eye length on Penske for 1G SV was the same.

I’m sure there would be details to work out on set up, but it’s a place to start.

EDIT - I still think about building another one for V5 and do all the stuff I couldn’t afford to do when I started out. The carb set up and suspension alone would be worth more than the bike! :D

I don't think Sam is there anymore.

This bike means a lot to me, even though I raced a ZX10R, I want this bike running..correctly. It is 100% stock with almost 3100 miles. Always non ethanol gas, bowls drained when not riding, battery tender etc. I mean air, gas, and spark.....other than the coil connections, igniter box (again, getting good spark) it seems like valves..what am I missing?

To date it has been to (since 2010) Talladega Cycle sales (said needed carbs cleaned/adjusted- no help- picked it up same condition- had words with service manager- left), St. Clair Air cooled Engines (selling Suzuki Dealer in 1986 - same carbs and adjustment . valve adjustment- no change), Leeds, AL MotoAce (I think) same- carbs cleaned adjust-no change), Allsports in Decatur- Carbs/clean and adjust- twice- no change), currently Carbs are on way back from GS specialist - no problem found, so ruling out carbs). I did empty fuel tank, filter in tank pristine, no rust or debris, all climate controlled)

Were you able to find an igniter? Because they're like unicorn poop. Although, someone on GS Resources did convert his to a Dyna ignition. They are a weak link on these bikes.

Found one, it’s on order. The FSM has a ohm test for the ignitor and mine passed? I need to find someone to check my valve clearance while it’s apart. That’s the ONLY other thing I can think of
