He's doing alright. Broken/fractured ribs (7) and a broken/fractured shoulder blade. Shoulders/arms/knee are pretty beat up/sore. He was taken to Greenville where they put a tube in to help relieve pressure to one of his lungs, and then transported him to Grand Rapids ICU. He got out of ICU yesterday afternoon, into a normal room - and will hopefully get the tube out today - and be able to leave tomorrow, if all goes well. Thank you to everyone at the track for their help - WERA, the corner workers (Jeannie who was working that corner) and friends at the track - especially Cristy, John, Chad, Mark & Dawn Merical and Doug. Cristy got him to the hospital when my stubborn dad didn't think he needed to go at first - not surprising. Mark & Dawn of course showed up at the hospital, which was great. John, Chad and Doug helped load the trailer while we were at the hospital, which was a huge help as well.
Damn. Hoping it wasn't so bad after seeing him get up. He definitely looked banged up, but not that banged up. Especially those ribs...ugh.
Glad to hear he hopefully will be home soon and on the mend. He was absolutely flying that race. Get well soon Joe!!
Glad he's in good hands, and the top negotiator was able to talk him into getting checked out! He's a tough dude!
Dang!! Heal up Joe! My thoughts are with you and the family. To lighten the mood, it sounds like Joe's calves did not experience any harm. Those things must be indestructible!
Ortho's found he has a torn rotator cuff to add to the fun. They thought he had a fractured knee as well, but it's just a hairline. Good news though is the tube to the lung was removed earlier this morning. If all goes well, he'll be able to leave the hospital later today, barring successful chest x-rays that the lung is supported enough amidst the broken ribs. And the calves are in good shape. He sheepishly said under meds to the PT nurse, "Yes, I have huge calves."
Whoa Eddie, sorry to hear about Joe. Please give him my best wishes for a full recovery and an early checkout time from Spectrum. We spent many, many days at Grattan together and none of us ever liked these type side trips to Greenville/Grand Rapids. Tell your mom to hang in there too! Wes
