Looking for the best gasket adhesive that is not a PITA to clean off when changing head cover gaskets.
What kind of bike? All of the bikes I have ever done have been pretty much dry install, with the exception of a tiny dab of plain old RTV on the half moon parts or something like that. RTV comes off easy and I've never had a RTV failure. At least that's been my experience. I'm no expert, though.
I like using Hi-Tack if i need to glue a gasket onto something i can't physically hold or manipulate any other way. I don't like using it but it's faster setting than RTV and the like. For actually making gaskets we use "the right stuff" as well. Grease can work too but might be a mess. Depends what kind of gasket you have. A flat paper gasket or a silicone type beaded gasket that lays in a groove on the cover ?
Thanks. It's for the silicone types that sit in the cover grooves that are always hard to clean the residue out real well.
Toyota black is as good as it gets. Purely by coincidence, it is part number 103. Not the cheapest stuff, but the best stuff I have ever used.
Strange, those gaskets tend to be held in there pretty well by little "stakes" on the gasket themselves. You shouldn't need any kind of sealant for those. A sealant may even be worse to use in conjunction with some gaskets.
Stupid question follows: is Toyota black only sold at Toyota dealerships? Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
This one doesn't stay in real secure and there is such a small amount of clearance putting the valve cover back on I tend to bump the gasket out of place. I just need something to hold it in place and not necessarily to help sealing. I seem to be getting a little klutzier in my old age.
You can buy it at many places, I get it from local toyota dealer parts counter. Google toyota packing 103. Even ebay has it https://www.ebay.com/p/Toyota-FIPG-Black-Silicon-Sealant-Engine/655286175?iid=202102898809
For those of us that may not use it very often - does it keep well? Seems like the generic ones you buy from the auto store always gum up and harden. Though I assume it's probably because I'm not storing them correctly.
