Was just watching a vid with Brembo's Eugenio Gandolfi, he mentioned carbon discs can get up to 800deg. I'm guessing he meant celcius, what brake fluid is good for those temps?
F1 carbon/carbon brakes work up to 3000F so yes, that would be celsius. They claim to use this fluid in F1 cars??? http://www.endless-brake.info/brake-fluid/rf650-racing-super-brake-fluid This too http://www.wp-motorsport.co.uk/res/HTX-115_uk.pdf Obviously the fluid isn't meant to operate in that temperature range. So I imagine when they have rotor/pad temperatures that get that high they implement design measures to isolate that heat from the fluid to some extent.
One of the things they probably have going for them is that both carbon and ceramics are terrible heat conductors, so the pads themselves would act as a heat shield between the discs and the calipers.
Yeah, the temp specs on it aren't that impressive compared against good old Motul. Of course, leave it to F1 to make a difference of a few degrees matter. Crazy mofos talking about how they can't add too many tiny little foam pads to the seat because it weighs too much. --Boiling Points-- RF650 Racing super brake fluid ($40/bottle) 323 celsius dry, wet is 218 degrees Motul RBF600 ($15/bottle) 312 celsius dry, wet is 216 degrees
IIRC Castrol makes a fluid that beats the wet boiling point on that by a good margin. Costs more though.
Interesting question. The F1 brakes burst into flame if the car stops after heavy braking. MotoGP gets far more airflow and the brakes cool rapidly. Too rapidly for use in rain as we all know.
Since the topic is brakes, here is a question. Does any pro racers that use rear brakes while riding for whatever reason, have a rear brake not completely bled fully. In other words, is the master cylinder have air in the line to help stop the rear wheel from locking?
I didnt think about its insulative properties, fair point. This is a list that I pinched from somewhere else, a car forum I think. SRF dominates the wet numbers as expected, I thought the fancy motogp fluid was unlisted but I guess its already there. I wish they sold brake fluid in smaller container volumes. Just this year Castrol SRF has gone down in price a good bit. It's the only stuff I use, for years now.
