The 2009 RidersDiscount.com Yamaha YZF-R1 Project Bike is for sale! The bike was prepared by former Factory Yamaha mechanic and chassis builder Seamus Taaffe, who has built bikes for, and worked with, guys like Ben Bostrum, Anthony Gobert, Tom Montano, Steve Rapp, Doug Henry, Roger Lee Hayden and Jason DiSalvo, amongst others. Seamus was exceedingly picky about every aspect of the build, stripping the bike completely to its frame and carefully assembling it to the specification you see here. Weight was saved wherever possible, be it the inclusion of titanium fasteners, the drilling of mounting brackets, down to the removal of unnecessary wires on the YEC kit harness. We even sourced a pair of Marchesini kit forged magnesium wheels, the ones that don’t include the OEM front brake rotor adaptor hubs to cut weight – nothing unnecessary was spared! Where suitable brackets could not be found, we fabricated our own, heat-shielding was added on coolant hoses where they came close to the engine/bodywork and wheel changes were made easier, not only by beveling the brake pads, but also via an underslung captive Brembo rear brake caliper.

A significant amount of time went into researching components, most noticeable of which, is the reinforced headstock area on the frame. We noticed that the AMA Factory Yamahas, as well as the Sterilgarda WSBK Yamahas, had some extra plates welded onto their frames. As a result, over the winter of 2009/2010, we had the R1’s frame braced to the same specifications as the WSBK Yamahas by British-based FTR Moto – Fabrication Techniques Racing. In addition to having built the frame on Ben Spies’ championship-winning YZF-R1, FTR is heavily involved in providing frames and complete motorcycles to race-winning Moto2 teams as well. Öhlins was used all around with gas-charged fork cartridges and a TTX rear shock to provide, what Kurtis Roberts called, the best handling superbike he’s ever ridden.

The R1’s engine has been built and maintained by Carry Andrews of Hypercycle to AMA American SuperBike specifications. An MB motorsports kit radiator paired with Samco hoses cools the engine while it breathes through a BMC CRF filter and exhausts spent gases through Graves kit full-titanium exhaust system. Every rider has complimented the R1’s crossplane engine for its exceptionally smooth yet, arm-pulling power delivery off the corners. We took that and threw in a YEC catalog’s worth of kit parts including cams, valve springs, gaskets &etc. for even more arm-pulling power. Of course, maintaining such a beast was critical, so after every weekend, brake fluid and engine oil were replaced with Brembo HTC 64T and Motul 300V, respectively. The cooling system is filled using de-ionized water with Redline Water Wetter additive.

The entire chassis is wrapped in SharkSkinz “kit” bodywork with the Team RidersDiscount.com custom paint job by Andrew Swenson Design. This kit bodywork features reshaped intake snorkels, larger, unobstructed ram air tubes and a reshaped plenum situated in front of the entrance to the airbox for greater flow-thru capacity and, consequently, more engine power. A large-capacity Gmeiner Racing Parts hand made aluminum fuel tank with quick-release cap is used in place of the OEM item. Its aft portion is also part of the specially-shaped seat styled to Ben Bostrum’s preferences using a SharkSkinz seat pan.

The bike has passed AMA American SuperBike tech inspection and has every bolt drilled for safety wire as required by AMA and WERA rules. Almost no expense was spared for this bike; from the choice of engine builder to suspension components to the use of titanium fasteners throughout – we used the best equipment we could find.

A total $50,503.59 in top-shelf aftermarket parts alone, grace this Yamaha YZF-R1 for a total retail value of $62,893.59 before taxes and labor! In addition to that, countless hours of skilled assembly (100+), track testing and set up have gone into honing this motorcycle to be a true track weapon.

Since these photos were taken we added the Graves kit velocity stacks and Graves kit titanium exhaust.

Marchesini M10R forged magnesium wheels have no OEM brake rotor adaptor hubs, reducing unsprung weight.

SharkSkinz kit intake tubes stay with the frame even when the upper fairing is no longer attached to the bike.

FTR-Moto Fabrication Techniques Racing reinforced the Yamaha’s frame in front of, behind and on top of the area immediately surrounding the steering head. Furthermore, two additional removable tuning plates are provided with the bike that may be mounted in front of the front engine mount struts to tune the frame’s stiffness.

Titanium fasteners replace the heavier OEM bolts. Custom radiator brackets were required to allow the installation and removal of the FTR-Moto frame brace kit.

Cox Racing Group’s radiator guard is used to protect the massive MB Motorsport kit radiator from damage and debris.

This Yamaha has been fully drilled for safety wired to exceed WERA and AMA requirements.

Larger-capacity handmade Gmeiner Racing Parts Superbike Fuel Tank is an all-aluminum affair.

The quick-release fuel cap’s base is attached to the fuel tank via titanium fasteners.

Kurtis Roberts called this Yamaha YZF-R1 the best handling superbike he’s ever ridden.

Thats an awsome bike! Wish I had the money for it.

I do have two questions though.

What is the switch for in the second pic, the one that says LIGHTS + ON?

How do you bleed the rear MC without dumping brake fluid all over the ground and swingarm?

The switch is the ON/OFF switch and replaces the ignition.

You have to be quite careful with brake fluid.

Ha, I over thought the switch to much. I was wondering what kind of lights would need to be turned on and off on a race bike.

    Thanks for the reply TJ.

It definitely is a pretty bike in person. Just took the motor out and sending it to be freshened up (including updated head). If we don't sell the bike you might just see it at a few events next year.

Currently on display in the owner's basement. We are not actively trying to sell it but if the right offer came along I am sure he would consider it.
