    Because they're lighter that way and easier to mount. Also, you don't need as much peanut butter to slide the axle in. 'strue....

    They figured it looks better with the upside down forks. In a few years, we'll see upside down engines and frames, and the seat will be under the bike. And you will need a little wheel installed on your helmet, kinda like Wile E. Coyote :
