Broke my collar bone yesterday. Realistically could I race in 2weeks?

ALready went to the hospital twice since it happened. Once for general (also cut up my hand) and a follow up with the orthopedic guy today. He says surgery isn't needed and won' speed things up. I have an array of slings and stuff he gave me that he said just use whatever make you the most comfortable.

I asked him the likelihood of being able to race in two weeks and he said he wouldn't recommend it, but it will ultimately be up to me if I feel comfortable and healed to maneuver the bike.

The bike seems to be a fairly easy fix with nothing severely damaged (I think/hope).

Just really bummed I may have to miss the Vegas round in two weeks. It was going to be my first expert race with WERA, and I really like that track, so I felt I could do decent and more importantly have a TON of fun!

I'm just waiting it out now. I had pre-registered weeks ago looking forward to Vegas. I really hope this works out.

I broke mine in 06 and the first doc I saw ddn't want to do anything . by the time I got a follow appt two weeks later, the bones weren't anywhere close to setting and the new doc, a sports medicine specialist, plated. I rode my street bike to the post surgery follow-up two weeks after that to have my staples removed and was on the track 6 weeks after surgery. I was far from 100%, but I was riding.

You won't heal in two weeks, no way... but that won't stop some guys... (I wouldn't do it. Heck it took me almost 3 months to heal..) If you fall it could be the shits, big time... ask your Doc, he should warn you of the risks of falling before it fully heals...

    Good Luck

I would say "maybe"....but you would need to have it plated today or better yet, yesterday.

if you want a serious answer as to whether you need surgery or not...get a copy of the Xray and send it to Dr Mark Sanders.

    www.sandersclinic.net

You can also call his office or his cell phone but send him the picture first. This guy is the best clavicle and knee guy around. he is also the Health moderator on thumpertalk.com and you can hear testimonials from plenty of his patients on that forum including mine.

Racing in two weeks?/ HHMMM the first 10 days will be the worse then it will start to feel a lot better. That would be your call and it depends how severe its broken. Post up a the Xray.

Have a clavicle plated is becoming more common because in the long run having your clavicle in the correct anatomical positon provides the best healing and long lasting strength. I had mine ti plated by dr mark. After seeing 4 ortho guys here in Atlanta(all of which came highly recommended) I ended up flying to see dr mark and it was the best decision I ever made.

Dr MArk probably has done a few hundred of these over the last 2-3 years where most orthos do 2-4 over the course of that same time..

Dr Mark is a truely gifted surgeon.... go to youtube and do a search...he filmed one of his clavicle surgeries including the bone graft from the Tibia...this is the exact operation I had and I can say it is as good as new...

ditto get it plated...and be back to full health in 6 weeks and most likely be able to race in 4weeks..

    No racing Vegas. Heal properly.

  10. No.

And attempting it would be pretty fucking stupid. It might be worth considering if you were being paid a big salary to ride for other people. But in your case, no.

I have broken (more like shattered) my left one twice. Both times it had to be plated. Even after being plated, i still didnt ride for 6-8 weeks.

Typically, you are looking at 6 weeks for a broken bone to heal. That is a generic average and obviously there are lots of variables.

It isn't even worth considering. Even if you do ride, you will NOT be 100%, probably not even 50% and hitting it again could be very bad.

Dont be a dumbass. Let your shit heal properly. You have absolutely nothing to gain and a lot to lose.

As a bonus I think there is a major blood vessel that runs in that area. Don't let the bones pinch it just so you can ride early.

i dont think two weeks will do it, you will be in alot of pain and it might rebreak again

Broke mine in July of last year. No surgery. The thing didn't stop moving around for a good 2 weeks. No way I could have raced. Took 4 weeks before I could have tried racing again.

A local guy fell here on the streets last summer after bumping in to a car that had stopped to turn into a drive way. When he fell to the ground after hitting the car at 10 miles an hour, he broke his collar bone. No big deal right? The collar bone displaced and severed a major artery, he bled out in 5 minutes.

    Go to Vegas.

Take your car and a big lawn chair. Kick back, relax, visit or make new friends, watch some killer racing and have a great time.

I wouldn't try to race with it that soon, I'd also get it plated, you'll heal faster and be in alot less pain. I broke mine a couple yrs. ago, had it plated, was on my street bike after 4 wks with no issues but not sure if I could have raced at 100 % then. I did race with it at 7 wks. with no problems at all.

I went street riding 4 weeks after breaking a collarbone for the first time (currently six times, 4 left, 2 right), as soon as it stopped moving around. Bike tankslapped over a railroad crossing and rebroke it!
