Starting a new job and have a 50 mile commute. looking for a cool commuter big bike(750 & up) that gets good mileage. Any big bikes get 40mpg?
My BMW R1100S gets over 50 if i keep it under 75 MPH. Over that speed, the mileage plummets to closer to 38-39.
On the highway my old ST1100 gets mid 40's. If I take it easy it can get close to 50. My Aprilia Futura has seen as high as 47 if I'm just cruising.
848's are supposed to get great mileage, but still doesn't make it a good commuter IMO. "cool", "big", and "commuter" don't really go together. I suggest a Yamaha Tmax...
My 2009 ninja 250 [geared tall, K&N, jet kit, slip on can] is getting 96 mpg @ 65mph My 2001 SV650 is getting about 60 mpg @ 65mph. My 1978 BMW R100RS is getting about 55 mpg @ 65 mph. Max's 2004 GSXR 750 is getting about 48 mpg @ 65 mph.
i can't think of any bikes that DON'T get at least 40mpg. Remember on bikes...they get better mileage in city driving...commuter style...than on the highway.
Bandit 1200 (or the new 1250). Comfortable ergos, better that 40 if you don't flog it and they are not too pricey.
yup. if you're just puttin' around...they have such good power to weight they don't take the big penalty that cars do with acceleration. and then on the highway side, they have so much more horrible aerodynamics...much of the edge is gone. i'll at least say this: in town and highway are very often the same on the bike...and depending on riding style, in town can actually be better than highway. at least that's what i've found in 25 years and 250,000 road miles.
You can have a Liter bike with a fuel consumption map in the right Parameters. 0-20 % tps from 2500-5000rpm (lean)
Bandit 1250 '07 to current year. I get 45 mpg on a 46 mile round trip commute. I have seen 48 mpg if I do the speed limits. They can be found cheap around the $5k range. Lots of torque which is good in traffic. Good ergonomics and Givi style trunks/cases can be added easily.
Any Ducati with the dual spark 1000cc engine. My Sport 1000 gets 52mpg no matter if I putt around or ring the snot out of it.
I don't mean to be negative, but what you save in fuel, you'll more than pay for in tire costs. Commuting on the bike is fun, but don't kid yourself about how "cheap" it is.
