Finally got a PVL and set up per instructions. Bike fired on first try. Static timing is set to 1.7 BTC. But when I check with a timing light, it's way advanced from the marks on the rotor/stator. Called Penton and they said you can't check it with a timing light due to the electronics in the system. Not really buying this, but hey, they're the experts. I would just trust the static settings, except if you just bump the wrench on the crank, you can move the piston .3 mm and not see a difference on the statice marks. Scares me. Anyone got input or better yet experience?

From Lyn Garland of Vintage Specialties:
The PVL system has an advance/retard curve that will not allow you to verify
ignition timing with a light as you can do with other systems. Stan Lippert
once complained about this same problem and then called back to say that when
he ran the engine at high RPM he could see the timing marks moving towards
his original setting. As for accuracy of your static setting, after you
install the rotor and tighten the bolt securing it to the crank you should be
able to re-set the timing to 1.7mm BTDC to within .01mm (if your dial
indicator is marked in hundredths). Questions/problems call or e-mail
