After TWS one of our teammates decided to not race with us anymore, so we need another rider for the remainder of the season. If interested, you must meet these requirements:
1. Willing to have fun at all costs. We are not blazing fast, but looking to get more seat time and experience from the big boys.
2. Must pay thirds of all racing expenses, i.e. tires, gas, traveling, etc.
If you're interested, please email me directly off-line. If you replied last time I was looking for riders, please email me again. We're Equal Opportunity Racers... http://www.wera.com/ubb/smile.gif

I bet nothing.I learned a lesson well this past weekend. After spending a shitload of money over the winter to build an endurane bike, the 1st rider backed out 1 week before the race, the second 4 days before. It worked out for the best, as I had to race the endurance machine on sunday.

MORNING SESSIONS SHARING ONE BIKE WITH THREE RIDERS.AT LAST I FEEL THAT COSTS SHOULD BE SHARED WHILE TRAVELING AND RACING I SHOULDNT ALWAYS HAVE TO ASK FOR GAS MONEY AND SUCH .AND WHEN I SPEND CASH I LIKE TO BE PAYED BACK IN CASH NOT CHECKS.I MADE MY COMMITMENT I HAD THE VAN FOR TRAVEL THE TRAILER THE CANOPY AND AS IT TURNED OUT THE BIKE ALSO THE FASTEST TIMES .I PAYED FOR A WHEEL AND TIRES OUT OF MY POCKET FOR THE TRACK DAY IN FEB SO IF I WAS I BETTING MAN CBR I WOULD TAKE THAT BET!
I think this thread illustrates the difficulty in running any kind of team, especially an endurance team. Just ask JU about his rider contracts.
The secret to AOD is the fact that we have one team owner, manager and accountant: Sam.
My advice: If you all don’t have money to burn get everything in writing down to the last pop tart. Otherwise you will all hate each other by the end of the weekend, let alone the year. Put one person in charge. Give that person your money. If you don’t trust him find another team.
And check the egos at the gate. The fastest rider is meaningless if the team doesn’t finish.

13x is correct indeed this is the way we run our team also and the egos must be left at the gate for to finish as a team you must work as a team and finish races

I could not agree more. It was my fault for not doing that in the first place. Now I hear alot of "I told you so".
Now I can let my wrist heal, not worry about it.

Something that Jim neglected to mention was that every team really needs someone to blame for anything and everything that goes wrong.
Tracy,
Who provides that function on your team?

I'm still friends with my endurance team partners from the 1996 season...probably because I still owe Reggie money.

I thought on most teams it was me.... Maybe they only blame me fo slow lap times.

Or if they lose laps because they chose not to have a scorer... Wasn't that the guy's problem on Saturday when I turned in the transponder to you at the tent? I caught the last sentence he said...

Sam
since brian and i started this team together
we both try to take what ever blame is cast equaly and resolve what ever problem quickly
so we can get to the business at hand trying
to win races not fighting among ourselves
some team situations may be differnt but the common goal is the same

We're planning on competing in a few endurance rounds next year with an A bike (GSXR) and possibly a B bike (R6). Being the owner of the A bike I'll also be team owner.
Our thoughts now are that at the beginning of the season, before anything good or bad happens, the team members sit down and agree to their financial responsibilities within the team. Money is then contributed by each team member UP FRONT and the account is managed by a mutually agreed upon accountant/treasurer.
Without an owner with very deep pockets we figure this is a good way to keep financial bickering at a minimum.
Any thoughts? Sam?

Racers, by nature, have to be competitive.
Teams, by nature, have to be cooperative.
That is the basic problem.
The second one is the money problem.
As I have previously published, our team goes through about $50,000 (more or less) in year. That includes the truck, the trailer, maintenance, the bikes, tires, hotels, meals, more tires, everything.
I think the season could be run on less but probably not a lot less and probably not much less with honest accounting.
If your teammates do not have that kind of money then you are going to run into problems. This can manifest when you ask for the $750 each at the end of the weekend and they start saying "well, I only ran 62 laps and you ran 78 laps so I should only have to pay X amount blah blah blah". That person should be kicked off the team as soon as possible.
Maybe the best thing is to take all your potential teammates out for pizza and see if the split it equally and chip in the proper amount (including tip).
The other big one is someone who is fast thinks that the rest of the team should pay his way because he is riding well. Then that person crashes the bike and the other guys think that he deserved it because he was riding too fast but said rider doesn't have any money to fix the bike so he says "well, the front end isn't that tweaked and the bodywork still can mount in two places."
This will cause a lot of friction as well.
The solution is to:
A. Determine the budget first.
B. Determine who is going to pay what portion of the budget.
C. Get the money in advance.
D. Make as much of the property team property.
E. If it is going to ruin your life when your teammate crashes the bike and puts a fence post through the engine than choose another pastime.
or something....
rfknight - Don't forget to talk about crash damage. This can be a very sticky subject. Like the time I borrowed our race bike for a practice day at Road Atlanta and threw it into the bridge. If that wasn't bad enough it was then stolen from the pits...
but of course it was Mongo's fault.
Jim

Yeah, I hated having to do that but I had no way of proving anyone was one track unless they had a scorer that was under our control...
Mostly people blame me for laps they think are missing when they are really just going slower.
My favorite Endurance quote - "I know I passed them four or five times in my stint"

Today, I'm in the process of putting them from one program to the other for points then that'll all go to html and get on the site.
Sam,
Any chance you'd like to type in a few pages more info on how to manage and run a large team? I've been interested in Endurance racing but I don't know the ins and outs of putting together an effort of that size. Since you've done it, and done it well, I'd love to be able to tap into some of that knowledge.
Maybe the Ministry of Information can convince JU to publish such an article in RRW. That way you get paid for it.
Come on, JU, crack open the wallet. http://www.wera.com/ubb/smile.gif
Why yes, I AM very free with other folks money. http://www.wera.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I am in the process of writing a small blurb on my experience at Texas. I'll send a copy to JU also, just for his reading enjoyment. He needs something crappy to read every now and again. It won't have years of experience behind it, but it might shed some light on the past six months of me trying to get a team together. Sam is the master though...
