Ok, so I went to pick up a "new to me" 1989/90 fzr 400. I was very pleased with the way it was race prepped, condition, etc, etc, etc. So I bought it.

HOWEVER, it had a california only tag on the fuel cap. I have not gotten it into the basement yet to pull it apart, but, what kind of stuff should I be looking for in a Califonia only model. Obviously emissions stuff, but is there anything I should or should not touch functionally? I have never seen/dug into a california only vehicle.

Thanks!

Rich

I would think exactly what you said: Emissions stuff. Other than that I would think that it would be pretty much the same thing.

I'm sure all the Cali stuff is gone if it's a race bike. It doesn't have the stock exhaust does it? Cal models had an EXUP valve in the exhaust. Probably some difference in the jetting also. But, like I said, probably all changed due to being a race bike.

No Exup. First thing I checked. V&H full system. Lookes like all is gone, but I will know more tomorrow night.

Thanks again.

I think the cams and CDI box were different also.

That is what I was hoping NOT to hear....

I don't think it's anything bad. The ign. curve I think may be a bit different to account for the fact that with the exup it has some bottom end. You should be able to plug in a 49 state one. You can get your cam profiles changed to a race spec and them that won't matter.

Its more of a degree job than a lift or duration issue? Maybe easier to just get my hands on some 49 state cams?

As long as I am pulling the head anyway.?

If there's a ignitor box issue, changing to the 49 state one should be no problem. If the cams are different, find out how much differnce. If it's a slightly milder ground cam, it might not be bad to keep. Could be similiar to the FZR600 cams, which are milder. But, are used in some FZR400 motors to get a mid-range power boost.

Yeah, I know, mid-range and 400 motors is an oxymoron.:)

I'm not sayin' Your loosin anything from these changes, Just that I think there is a difference. They may be better.

You should get in touch with Jason Temme, Team Serpent.
His dad, Jim has a ton of knowledge with the FZR400s

I have just started to get into this bike. When I can the cams in my hands, take somemeasurements, the CDI numbers, etc, etc, etc I will start to ask some more intelligent questions. I will look them up then.

I think that I saw them racing at Nelson this year. Same guys right?
