After seeing a lot of interest and receiving a lot of requests for a group buy for the bullet camera systems we have, I've decided to go ahead and offer them at a discount for racers until we run through the current stock we have on these units.
You can use coupon code "racer" in the checkout to subtract $25 from the total making the total price $235 +ship

I have one of these set-ups.

Here is a couple of links to videos from Talladega.

I didn't know this at the time, but the camera was set on medium quality so the video feed could have actually been better

thnx for the vidz. Where did you mount the bullet lens? by the air ram perhaps?

1) Bullet Camera.... I drilled 4 holes beneath the air intake duct. I used velcro and zip ties to hold the lens in place.

2) Microphone - zip tied to the fairing stay to keep and interference from the motor and wind noise minimized.

3) batter pack - put it between the gages and windscreen on top of the air duct.

4) camera itself. I made a cheap and easy plate out of steel with a hole drilled through it to mount it on top of the triple tree where the brake fluid resovior mounts

pics of my mounting

Picture 1) Camera sitting on cheesy bracket. nothing more than sheet metal painted with one hole drilled through it. Not to mention to small circles of industrial velcro.

Picture 2) Bullet camera mounted underneath air intake. Velcroed for axis adjustability, and 2 times secured with zip ties.

Picture 3) Top view of battery pack. It is velcro-ed to the top of the intact duct.

Picture 4) Profile view of the battery pack sitting on top of the intact duct. Note the zip ties holding the batteries in place, a must.

Picture 5) Microphone in fairing stay, this would normally face the inside of the biek with a zip tie, but this was put on just for show and tell.

More mounting

Here is the wad of wires zip tied together because I like neat and orderly. I put a zip tie through another zip tie and use it to fasten the wad of wires to the bottom of the head light mounting hole.

Sorry for the crappy focused pictures, my newly built tire race is blocking one of the fluorescent lights

You have to take it off the front stem stand if to mount the camera. But No problems at all.

Have you tried mounting it off center under the air intake so you don't have to remove it when using a stem stand?

i just got the camera and the bullet lens today. Its a nice little device package. The recording device is very easy to use. Came with instructions on how to plug the bullet lens, microphone, AA battery, and camera together. If it wasnt raining outside i'l probably have this thing mounted and give it a test run. Instead just recording around the house. Comes with the 1GB SD card. that will do for now until i get the 2GB. Only thing that bothers me is the wires cuz its everywhere. Something a ziptie can fix.

I installed the rechargeable battery into the DVR unit, but the rest is a bit confusing. I just want to get it right and then worry more about mouting it to my bike.

I got mine for this past weekend, and I forgot to print out the English instructions before I left home. A buddy of mine and I tackled figuring out how to use the DVR, and how to wire everything up by trial and error.

Several Guinesses and 2 hours later, we had it working and mounted it up on the bike. It rocks, period.

question: how large of an SD card can the DVR use? I had a great battle (and did my best laps) in the last race of the day, but didn't have enough space to get it on vid...bummer. I'll have a pile of SD media with me from now on, and a laptop to transfer files.

Cool, looking forward to checking them out. The unit will hold up to 2GB cards... about an hour per GB. I usually carry 3 1GB cards with me to the track and switch cards every couple races/sessions to make sure I never come close to running out.

Question: Will the DVR function normally when it's plugged into the charger via the USB? I'm asking because I've already sourced a 12V PSU for the camera that I'm going to wire to the bike, and I'll adapt a 12V/5V converter and power the DVR as well if I can. That would obviate the need to worry about any batteries or charging (a good thing).

Thanks re: the video. I couldn't be happier. Also I want to stress to folks that the YouTube vid is not representative of the actual video quality. The raw video you get is very good...good enough that unless you're making a major motion picture using your footage, it's hard to see why anyone would spend $700+ on a cam setup when you can have this for under $300.

Glad to hear that you are impressed with it also! with hard wiring, you shouldn't have a problem... the unit only goes into USB transfer mode if you have it hooked up to the computer... if it powers on with the AC adapter to function, then it would be the same for a hard wire cable.

Hey Dave, is that the system that you shot the VIR LWTSS race with? Nice race by the way, you continue to both defy the laws of physics with your amazing braking.

Hi there;

Ya that's the one. I think the only think I defied in that race was the mandate to actually go somewhere on the green flag. Of course, sleep-walking through L1 did me no favors either, but I got going ok after that :)

Nice vid quality though eh? I'm diggin' it. Remember that the YouTube vid is significantly compressed compared to the actual video file...it looks way better.

I'm going to say probably not. You can try it though. Unless someone makes a switch for a twin female to a single male RCA jack, I think you'd have to swap RCA cords while you were actually videoing or have separate units for both.

If I bought another bullet cam where can I get a switch to select from front to rear camera?

We don't carry AV switches. I know radio shack has a couple models of AV switches, but I don't know if they have small enough ones for this particular application. All you would need is a single switch for the yellow video plug... the audio plugs would stay the same so you wouldn't need a switch for that.

I got mine and it has worked great. Thanks for putting this deal together for us, Vrooomr6.

Now last night I decided to follow georgiadawg's lead and hard wire this thing to the bike. Bought a switch, ran positive lead to the switch, then back to the adapter from the battery pack. Ran a wire from the negative battery side directly to the adapter from the battery pack and .........nothing. :( The recorder is working fine but when I choose "AV IN" I get a dark screen? I've tried several combinations of using the switch in the on position, off position, with the camera plugged into the recorder and not plugged in but I've not been able to gain a picture from the camera. Anyone have a suggestion on something I need to try or may have over-looked? Thanks.

Glad to hear that you guys are enjoying the units! The hard wire looks good, georgiadawg!
The included battery pack method is the most stable and easy, but the hard wire can fairly easily be done.

With your hard wire issue, jhuff1219, have you tried unplugging the AV jack from the recorder all together before navigating to the AV screen, then plugging it in? If the bullet cam has full power, it can blank out the screen on the recorder just when you first power it on.
Navigate to the AV screen on the recorder, then supply the power to the bullet.

Yes, I have tried powering up the camera with and without having the camera plugged into the recorder.

But it was working fine with the battery pack?
If so, I wonder what voltage is going through the direct wire you made. Do you have a multimeter to check that wire?

I do not have one but there's a hardware store just down the end of this shopping center I can surely pick up a cheap one to test your theory. Funny, I was thinking something similar but I wanted to test the wire from the switch to the camera power adapter and see if the power was coming through the switch. Any other suggestions?

Yes, the camera was working fine on the battery pack before I decided to hard wire the unit to the bike.

Yes, no problems when I used the battery pack that came with the unit.

Good, then it is definitely something with the direct wire cord.
It sounds like your wire may have resistance in it, or is a tad shy of 12V.
A multimeter should be able to tell you where the problem is.

Okay, got the multi-meter to the bike: results 12.70 at the bike's battery, 12.70 at the switch when in the on position and 12.70 at the adapter from the battery pack. Any ideas?

Vrooomr6, thanks for all your suggestions but it turns out some shotty wiring connections were the culprit. The battery pack adapter wires were not connected securely to the new power wires. Once I attached those wires to the battery pack adapter more securely the camera powered right up and I'm in business. 95% of the time it's the operators fault, the equipment is rarely the problem. :)

Bill I finally used mine up at Deals Gap last week and the vid footage is fabulous! I'm liking the hardwire option, but still like the portability of the unit to used for mountain biking, etc... Can the adapter used on the battery pack be purchased at Radio shack too so I can have multiple options?

Out of necessity I needed to charge the LCD and found my Razor cell phone charger works very well at charging the player/recorder.

Glad to hear Shawn! Those adapters are fairly common... I'm pretty sure radio shack has them on hand.

It is nice that the recorder uses the same USB adapter as most of the phones nowadays. I use my cell phone car charger sometimes too and it works great.

Thanks!

I think I'd like to order this setup. Looks very slick.

I have a question though... the camera is waterproof, but what about the recorder? It doesn't appear to be.

If not, has anyone found a way to waterproof the battery pack and the recorder?

Are the cables all long enough that things could be stored in the tail instead of up near the handlebars?

Also, If I place an order tomorrow (Friday), can you ensure that I receive it before next weekend? (going to the track and then on a long trip)

Thanks! Very slick setup you've put together.

The recorder will have no problem getting a bit of moisture on it, but submersing it definitely wouldn't work well. If riding in the rain, I would cover it with a plastic bag to be safe.

The cables are definitely long enough to route them to or from your tail section.

If you have an order in by friday, or monday morning, I can definitely get it to you by Friday, even if you are in California (max 4 day shipping) If you are closer than that, delivery would be anywhere from 1-3 days with regular shipping.

I did this too, sortof, but you need to put it about 6 inches to either side of the center of the bike, otherwise your fender will hit the camera when you're under hard braking. Unless you ride like a vagina, that is.

I'm in the process of installing mine. I place the recorder(MP4 player) velcroed to the front inner fairing. Its on the right side of the gauges on a flatter spot of the sharkskinz. I will take pictures when I'm done.
The power I'm following what others have done and hard wire it to the bike. My problem is I need to find a place for the camera. My front stand prevents it from being mounted under the front fairing. I'm sure when I get some time I will find something.

If you have race plastics, ignore this post because the tail section thing won't work.

I ended up moving mine around a bit and don't have the final pics... but here is what I did. (can't show you pics because the bike is wrecked lol)

mount velro on the cam and on the underside of the front fairing above the front fender. I did it on the right side (side with exh) of the bike about 5 inches from the center so the fender wouldn't hit the cam under braking. once you've got it velcroed up, use that to see where you want to drill. I drilled two holes on either side of the camera and looped zip ties around the camera and up through the plastic there. (should work whether you have street or track glass)

Then just run the wire up around the head tube and down behind the side tank panel... along to the battery tray and all the way back to the tail. That's where I put the recorder, battery pack, and microphone. Worked great. My video is a couple posts up.

I just finished hard wiring the unit into my 2006 R6. I made a plug to fit the (pilot) light. The little light above the headlights. Anyways this would save me placing a switch to turn off/on the unit. When the bike is on the camera would be powered. This worked well on my test fit by turning on the key.
I coiled all the wires up behind the gauges and mounted the player/recorder on the inner part of the front fairing.
The camera I figured I would just duct tape on the body since I'm not sure what view I want to have at any one time.

My problem is that when the key is turned on and the bike is off the picture is perfect. When I turn on the bike I get specks on the screen that increase when the throttle is turned.

Do I need an in-line power filter or do I need a 12 volt in-line dc regulator. I found a few spots that sell them but they all seem to be from the UK. Any help would be appreciated.

If you are hard wiring the unit instead of just using the battery pack from the kit, you will need to use a simple noise filter to avoid interference with the bike.
Radio shack has those noise filters you need, and they are also fairly widely available online. That should do the trick:beer:

For direct wiring, I have seen both the Ferrite choke cores and capacitors used, but I don't know for sure which is the best method for direct wire.
The batteries are the most stable so that is what I included with the kit. Maybe someone who has modified theirs for direct wire can post up which method they used.

The most common reason for not getting a picture is from powering up the DVR with the AV already plugged in. Try powering on, navigating to the AV screen, then plugging in the input.

Bill,

NO QUESTION has this setup helped me look through and figure out all the areas of track that I need to work on. Not to mention the video quality is so good that I can see where my lines are off and clearly pick out reference points like cracks in the pavement and such.

Have you found a way to mount yours such that you can see your body at all?

My guess is that some members hard wire them to something like the head lights, so that the camera would be powered only when the bike is running. If you go directly to the battery there should be no need for a filter. just put a switch to cut power to it.

Actually the right way to do it would have been to use a simple Bosch relay wired to a switched 12 volt.

Bosch Relay wiring (http://www.fastronixsolutions.com/Relay_Wiring.pdf).

Look on page 13 at the "Ignition bypass to eliminate noise." diagram.

Comes on when the bike is on and goes off when the bike is off. Camera powered directly from the battery and no noise. No need for the extra switch that you will forget to turn off at one time or another.

You can also tag a little voltage regulator onto this circuit to drop the voltage from 12 to 5 volts and power the recorder as well. No fear of the recorder battery crapping out during a session and no need to pull it off the bike and charge it during the day.

Damn, so I thought this relay would not confuse me but damn!

So somebody that has wired this help me break it down. Hopefully this can help others too.

Relay:

http://www.partsexpress.com/images/330-070m.jpg

http://www.partsexpress.com/resources/relay.gif

Wiring diagram:

http://www.partsexpress.com/resources/relay15a.gif

SO,

30 = 12V Positive to Battery
85 = Ground
86 = To Ignition (and here is my confusion...what wire to ignition?)
87 = To Camera
87A = left empty

And for the voltage regulator I am assuming you can just tie that into the 12V wire from the battery and out to the DVR for a 5V power supply.?.

http://www.tkk.fi/Misc/Electronics/circuits/7805.gif

1. Unregulated voltage in from Battery
2. Ground
3. Regulated voltage out to DVR

http://www.tkk.fi/Misc/Electronics/circuits/psu_5v.gif

Jetbdude

86 would go to a wire that is only powered when the ignition is "ON". It does not have to be "the" ignition wire.

Venom51
07-15-2008, 05:14 PM
30 is an always on 12v from the battery. 86 is a switched 12 volt that is only on when the ignition key is on.

I would put the voltage regulator on the 87 side of the relay. Some of the DVR's have the 12+ on the outside jacket of the round power plug. If there is always power there it can find a ground and cause a direct short.

Just a heads up for direct wiring with the relay... it will work great to power the bullet cam setup, but be aware that the DVR goes into USB mode when plugged in if you are also going to try to power it with the 5V portion of the relay
You can use that direct wire successfully, but when recording, the DVR needs to be running on its built in battery. The bullet cam can still be powered by the bike no problem.

Just an update:

I am on my second bullet cam now... I thought the first one had irreparable damage from a crash so I purchased another one... now the second bullet cam is having a similar issue after VERY limited and light use.

Basically the picture was fine... then in the middle of a session you can see it suddenly bump around and then permanently go out of focus.

I talked to a friend and he said he had a similar issue. If you use some rubber and some vice grips supposedly you can grab the disc at the very rear of the bullet cam and unscrew it from the main body tube. When you do this the entire inside of the camera slides out with the rear plate. He said there are screws that secure the CCD and he had to loctite them and retighten them since vibration had worked them loose.

I am going to try this soon... but if that doesn't solve the problem then I have no idea why the camera suddenly failed after so little use... will keep everyone updated in case this happens to others.

Thanks for letting me know. Something like that is definitely covered if you want to send it in for me to service for you. We had a batch of about 10-15 units mid summer that had the issue that you describe, and upon opening one up, it turned out that the factory did not use a locktite material on the 2 internal mounting screws for the circuit board. It is easy to apply some locktite on the two screws and retighten them. Let me know if you need my help with it. I made the manufacturer aware of the issue as soon as I found out, and haven't had any issues reported in months.
If anyone that has purchased has any issues, I am happy to help get it taken care of.

Just saw your questions guys.
We also carry the hero, and I have used both. The hero isn't as easy to get a good view, and can get in the way of fenders, bodywork etc., compared to the bullet cam. However, the hero has slightly more clear sound, and can be moved around easier since everything is contained in the case.
The resolution is very close. The bullet cam system uses a better compression for the video also.

The bullet cam takes 2GB or smaller cards. With a 2GB card, you can fit a little over 2hrs of footage.

My teammate just ordered and installed the kit and we had no luck getting it to work.

The focus on the camera apparently vibrates until it is completely out of focus.

The DMP3 recorder refused to work right. The first video it stopped recording after 53 seconds, so we tested it in the pits and it stopped recording after 3 seconds. Then it refused to record at all. The stop icon stayed there and would not record. We tried different SD cards, same thing.

Hey Lars,
No problem, I can help get any issue resolved for you. It may be a quick adjustment to make, it may be a wiring issue, or in a worst case scenario if something is wrong that we can't fix by trying a few things, I can send another right away and then send a paid return label on the kit you have. This unit has a .9 Lux rating which is pretty good for low light. I comes with a sun filter that is required on sunny days so the brightness doesn't wash out the picture. If you take the sun filter out, you can run it lower light situations with great results.

Yes, although it doesn't come set up to do that, you could add a switch to the hookups and easily go back and forth between inputs. You could also just have the bullet cam AV hookup in an accessible place and just switch the plug ins while leaving both cameras mounted. There could be a few ways to do it, depending how fancy you want to get.

I cut a slit in the side of teh box to feed the wires through. If you then apply some silicone caulk, it will be nice and waterproof. As it is, it is highly water resistant. My son is racing Hare Scrambles, so he was going through sand, mud, water, you name it. The box kept everything nice and protected even with him crashing on it a few times. The mount is designed for another brand of camera that is a bit thinner. I had it milled out to fit the camera from CE Digital. I lost the set screw, but that is a $.30 part from Home Depot. The mount is darn near crush proof. You can drive a car over it and it will not bend. It also has a piece of lexan at the lens end to protect the camera lens from rocks, bugs, etc.

$80 shipped anywhere in CONUS.

It would make a great addition to the set up you get from Bill and ease your concerns about trashing it in a crash.

Hey Bill,
I sent you guys a message on cedigital. I've never been able to get my recorder to work. It always locks up less than a minute into the video. I've tried it out at the track several times, but it always locks up. Any help?

Hey Brandon,
I just received your message and PM'd you with a few things to try. Either way, you are definitely covered.
Thanks.

Where can I find a replacement for this oddly pinned RCA cable?
