go over to http://www.jenningsgp.com/forum
there are many people there that will gladly help you. read the post on how they run the day for new riders. It will give you the low down. Talk to SpeedyTide and Pitboy...im sure they will hold you hand and make sure you are safe.

have fun and don't crash....Your not going to set the track record so don't even try. Haha i know, i see the record is like 1:14 set by Geoff May. I have also done my research and know that 1:30s or faster @ Jennings is considered EXPERT. I not going for fun, strictly for business, to get faster and get my feet wet, so that when i race WERA Novice this year, i can feel comfortable and do well. Thanks bro!

Yeah, dont sweat it, we are there to help and will pull you around at a pace you are comfortable with. We will follow you for a few laps and see how you are doing, then we'll pull you in go over a few changes and then pull you around behind us. As you skill level increases and confidence increases we will get faster and thus so will you. Dont expect anything your first time out besides taking your bike and yourself back home in the same shape you arrived in.

That sounds cool, how long does it usually take to learn/get comfortable with the Race line?
Are you gonna be there then? (dec. 29-31)
the learning curve is different for everyone.. ive seen people never get out off novice..ive also seen people bump to expert the first day

Cool man. Who can i ask to help me setup my suspension for that track? I have no clue where my clickers should be set at, and the ride height etc.
that i cant answer. you will have to ask pitboy. im in california now. i used to be an instructor there but i havent been there since july so im not sure whos around. hooters suzuki used to be out there every track day...but i have heard they are no longer doing that. Pitboy? some insight please =)

Your first ever trackday you don't need to be worrying about your suspension.
Especially on something like a brand new R1.

i'll be there on the 31st. i think that the biggest thing to work on will be throttle control on the liter bike-jennings has some tight turns that are notorious for spitting ham fisted riders off. as far as what to expect...jennings in late december could freezing or summer like, bone dry or monsoon wet(in my best forrest gump voice)-jennings is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get...best advice would be to learn the track and the bike and proceed from there-have fun.

Cool guys, I appreciate the insight.
418- I am worried about the suspension, especially the rear for low speeds, i want the rear to hook up and dig in, something it hasn't been doing.
*I am not really new to riding, just never been on a track before. For all i know, i might be the most Squid out there, who knows? But i do plan on taking Trackdays and WERA Racing very seriously. This is my life. It's what i live for. Everything else is second (except for God).
Well, I'll tell you right now a R1 is going to be hard work around Jennings. My '03 surely was.
I would leave the suspension damping stock and just set up the pre-load yourself. Then if you're not happy with that, go to a suspension expert.
Also tires is a big deal here. I hope you have a brand new set of trackday tires ready. Anything with that much power will go through rear tires like crazy.
PitBoy
12-16-2007, 08:03 PM
Like 418 said, your suspension is fine the way it is. I know guys on stock GSXR's doing in the low 20's (blackbeener) out there without an issue. What you want to do is just start learning the track. I know you are eager but I will tell you, I've ridden there every track day for a year and still am learning better and faster lines around the track. Just make sure you come out there with good rubber (preferably new rubber) and thats about it. My opinion, is get a set of Pirelli Super Corsa's. I know we are going to hear a lot of debate about different tire brands but the fact is most people agree that the Pirelli's are the most predictable, especially for a new person who isn't sure what it feels like to slide. They will give you warning when you are pushing them too hard where michelins dont. Enjoy yourself, and look me up. I will be there both sat and sun and will be located in the VIP section next to the track shop. If you go ahead and introduce yourself I will make sure we spend some time on the track and get you comfortable with everything. You'll love it, and take your time with the racing. Its a whole different ballgame when there are other riders actually trying to keep you from passing and you're playing chicken coming into turn 1. Learn the track, get some seat time and race when you are comfortable.

Alrite guys, good info. Lets talk tires, i Have a used set of Pirelli Diablo Supercorsas being GIVEN to me (120 & 190/55) for this trackday we speak of...will this work? I have been running on 190/50 2CT's for quite some time, and the R1 will get kinda sketchy with these (more so the rear than the front). I have only done very aggressive street riding so far, and these tires have not been sticky enough. They, along with my R1, have taught me valuable throttle control! I have experienced plenty of times, the rear end stepping out (kinda fun sometimes/totally scary other times lol)
I guess what I'm worried about, is having my clickers set all wrong, running a taller tire in the rear, and have never run Pirelli DiabloSupercorsa's (or any DOT tire).
And when you guys say preload height or whatever...is that the same thing as Rider/Race Sag in Motocross? Because my Shock only has 1-9 clicks having to do with the firmess (preload) of the shock. Are we talking moving the forks up through the triple clamps or what?
***Pitboy, my name is John. I guarantee you that 'YOU' will be the first person i look for when im there. I'd like to swap numbers and talk to you on the phone sometime before then if thats cool.
Thanks for everything guys, sorry if im talking your heads off, but this is how i learn, i guess. I ask a shitload of questions.
This Forum is the best i have ever been on. All those other Yamaha this&that forums are mostly about getting attention and looking cool and stuff. I can actually learn shit on here from dudes who aren't posers

You could jump over to sportrider.com or the like for suggested suspension settings.
If you have no idea of what does what, set the clickers in the middle, i.e. 5 of 1-9.
Do a search for 'sag' & find several 'how-to's'.
You'll be too busy to worry about suspension settings.

The tires you get depending on the life of them should be fine. Also, Leon will be at the track that weekend I believe. He is the Southeast Pirelli Vendor and can hook you up with some additional tires if you need some. Feel free to give me a call if you like but we'll cover everything you need to know in our riders meeting at Jennings and then starts the 1 on 1. Take is slow and try to work on one thing at a time and you'll have a blast. (863)660-6628 is my cell. I run my own business so I am in and out of meetings throughout the day, if I dont answer right away leave a message and I will get back with you.
Take care, see you at the track.

GMD Computrak is a network suspension service. I am assuming you mean Eric is coming from GMD Ft. Lauderdale? If he's not there on a private contract with someone he should be able to help you get your suspension setup and even make upgrades if you are ready to do them. FYI,
There is a two day Ed Bargy Race School down there Dec 29-30 at Jennings that weekend. You might want to consider that if you really think you are going to race. You have to take a race approved school to become a provisional novice to race in WERA. Ed's course is quite comprehensive and you will learn quite a bit more than you would just riding around on a track day.
Just something to consider....

Hey thanks!, i appreciate the advice and concern
* I have already called Ed Bargy and spoke to him on the phone. I know for a FACT i will be racing WERA this year, and i am well aware of the school. You gotta look at it from my point of view: 2 days of open track practice learning from Pitboy (& various others) @ a cost of $250 for my first ever time on the track....or $700 for a 2 day race school. Right now i don't have the funds for the school, so that will have to wait till next month. That still gives me time to be at the Barber race in March, god willing.

Geico trailer?
Is this a cross branding thing? Will they pay contingency in '08?
god helps guys get on track? Does he pay contingency?

It says Geico because it's too cole to remove the wrap right now.
Lori has an idea about how to make it look, but I have to check with my sticker dood about it before I commit.

I recently did my first trackday back in October there and everyone at that track is great. Like everyone says, don't try and break any records, just go there and have fun. I'll be back there on the 30/31 so stop and say hi. I'll be the guy with a bright neon green/yello F2. You can't miss it. Have fun man, that's the most important thing. Oh yeah and watch all of the other classes, cause you learn a lot about lines, and feel free to talk to people there. I did not meet one person not willing to lend a hand.

F2?! You need to get racng with us. I run an F3 in V7 mw and hw.
Drop by if you have any questions on your bike. I've been racing mine since '02 and racing bikes that used f2 parts sine 95.

This will be my first time on the bike. I bought it about a month ago for 400 bucks and fixed it up. If you have an F3 there I'll be by you asking a bunch of questions. See ya then.

now why would i pick on someone and their old bike when i've been passed by said old bike!
stickboy274

Because you like to make fun of me, and you know I'll do the same for you.
now why would i pick on someone and their old bike when i've been passed by said old bike!
yes nothing like getting passed by Derek and his 10 year old bike when you are a newish R6 with a fair amount of work done it it. At least he didn't pull me at all from T14-T3 at Jennings after he passed me in 7 or 8.
stickboy274
12-23-2007, 01:47 PM
I'll work on the bike so it does better through there. Maybe someday I can get more than 92 HP out of it
yeah and my R6 probably weighs in a good 30 pounds less, and has 30 or so more HP, and you still came by me like I was in reverse, and you say you have lost like 5 seconds at Jennings so that makes me feel even worse.
maybe I should just build a vintage like Stumpy and come out and play
stickboy274
12-23-2007, 01:53 PM
Vintage is a good place to play.
I mneed to get back to my pace. It's bothering me that I have slowed down. I'll start riding my mountain bike again. Between that and all the dirtbiking I'm doing, I should be able to get back up to speed. I'll play at some trackdays and talk to Ed some more to get it back.
Im sure if you raced/rode more instead of selling them fancy tires you got, you would get it back also :Poke:  :D
speaking of racing, you think you can, or will want to do some endurance with me in 08?

I dont wish to start anything and to be honest I understand completely where Ed is coming from, I once had a guy tell me to run 10w/30 motor oil in my forks who was sporting some white plates so I realize there is a lot of misinformation out there. But on the other hand a broad statement like that lumps in individuals like me who donate their time, tires, fuel and at times bikes to help new people for the pure love of the sport. We dont get paid for riding or helping out we simply get free track time which just for the record doesn't even BEGIN to cover a days worth of tires, fuel, and so on. I personally have been through 2 bikes and most recently a very nice stay at Valdosta medical center as a result of control riding. We are their for the new people who are just starting out and are simply trying to return the favor to the sport for those who took the time with us in the beginning. When these guys get to a point where they are beyond any further help from us we gladly step back and tell them its time to invest in a actual school like Bargy's. Again, not wishing to start a debate just want to set the record straight.

You guys are not the ones Todd is talking about. I think control riders are good things to have at track days to keep folks out of trouble and help point people in the right direction. Todd's talking about some track day guys who just read magazines and think they know something about what is going on at the track and try to coach people. New riders don't know the difference and it can lead to bad habits. Bad habits can be dangerous as the new track rider gets faster and if done long enough can be hard to break.
Most race schools like Ed's are much more comprehensive and go over most of the major topics of performance riding that new guys need to know (and experienced guys for that matter). We just try to get our students to know to be careful who they get their information from. My opinion is that for the most part the earlier you get good formal training the the earlier you learn to ride less by the seat of your pants, ride faster more safely, and gain tools for helping you work on getting faster if you want to race.
Shoot, I'm sure there are some control riders that are faster than me...except maybe Todd. :moon:

Thats a very cool attitude to have! PayItForward
That means alot when someone is willing to help out, teaching me things and helping me learn/get faster! I will do the same if i am ever in a position to do so...there are too many guys today just worried about themselves, but if you give a little, you will get alot in return. Like the J Timberlake song, "what goes around comes back around"
I truly LOVE this sport, as do you

I wish, I got to work and I don't have the money, I am moving in about 2 weeks so most of my money is spoken for right now. I am looking forward to trying out Stone for the first time, if they are as good and I like them as much as everyone is saying I will, I will be sending lots of money your way this year.
stickboy274
12-25-2007, 09:55 PM
I'm ok with you sending $$$ my way, and the 002's are really good.
Do they grip better than the slicks? Or last longer?
stickboy274
12-25-2007, 11:56 PM
They grip much better than the old slicks, and I had a team get 4 hours at RRR on a spritn front and they were running 1:16's at the end of the race. That's lasting pretty good.
How old are the old slicks? Are there new ones? I'm just thinking of the YCX, YCY that everyone is using.
stickboy274
12-26-2007, 11:17 AM
All the stuff we have now works. The slicks do have more grip than the DOT's. The ycx front and ycy rear is a great set up.
hey stick sould you PM pricing for 10+ sets of slick 120/180
stickboy274
12-26-2007, 11:32 AM
Yeah, I'll get it to you. I'm waiting on some info to come in, and then I will get it to you.
cool thanks, is still have the pricing for the 002's has that changed or what?
stickboy274
12-26-2007, 11:41 AM
I don't know. I'm waiting to see still.
ok cool, the 002's compared to slicks, how is the life better worse or about the same?

Hey whats up brother!? I just really started gettin into it! I ABSOLUTELY Love being on the track! I have to give LUKE Props for showing me the line and letting me run with him for several sessions on my first day! I ran 1.27's consistently on Sunday, my 2nd day! I was pretty stoked about it!
